# effect-ts

A skill for nontrivial Effect 4 work: services, layers, typed errors, Schema, Config and runtime. Keeps the agent from mixing up v3 and v4 APIs.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when a project runs Effect 4 and the task goes past a plain `effect` import. The agent resolves the installed `effect` and `@effect/*` versions from the manifest and lockfile, then inspects neighbouring services, layers and tests. Local conventions decide how code is organised; the installed package source decides what the API actually does.

Inside is a router table pointing at references: services and layers, Config, Schema and JSON Schema, testing with `@effect/vitest`, runtime and concurrency, streams, pattern matching, `effect/ai`, `effect/sql`, Next.js and Effect Atom. For `effect/http`, `effect/rpc` and `effect/cli` it tells the agent to read the package source directly. There is also `scripts/effect-source.sh`, which keeps a cached clone of `Effect-TS/effect` at the newest release and fetches at most once per 24 hours.

Check your version before installing. If `effect` is not 4.x the skill does not apply, and for 3.x the author points to a separate skill: `npx skills add PaulRBerg/agent-skills#shelved --skill effect-ts-v3`. Every `@effect/*` package has to match the installed `effect` version exactly — on a mismatch the skill says to report it rather than code around it. The cache script needs git and network access.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PaulRBerg/agent-skills --skill effect-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/effect-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/effect-ts/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PaulRBerg/agent-skills --skill effect-ts -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/effect-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PaulRBerg/agent-skills --skill effect-ts -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/effect-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PaulRBerg/agent-skills effect-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/effect-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PaulRBerg/agent-skills --skill effect-ts -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PaulRBerg/agent-skills --path skills/effect-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/effect-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PaulRBerg/agent-skills --skill effect-ts -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PaulRBerg/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/effect-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a service and its dependencies into layers
- model failures as typed errors instead of exceptions
- check `effect` and `@effect/*` versions before editing
- test fibers and retries with `@effect/vitest`
- confirm a signature against the installed package source

## Example prompts
- add an orders service and wire it up through a layer
- move this module's error handling to typed failures
- write a retry test for this effect with `@effect/vitest`

# Effect 4

Apply Effect 4 semantics from project-local architecture, the narrowest relevant reference, and source matching the
target's installed packages.

## Workflow

Do not activate this workflow merely because a file imports `effect`. For nontrivial Effect work:

1. Resolve the target package or workspace and its exact installed `effect` and relevant `@effect/*` versions. If
   `effect` is not 4.x, stop because this skill does not apply. For 3.x, point the user to the v3 skill:
   `npx skills add PaulRBerg/agent-skills#shelved --skill effect-ts-v3`.
2. Confirm lockstep versions: every `@effect/*` package must match the installed `effect` version exactly. Report a
   mismatch instead of coding around it.
3. Inspect neighboring services, layers, errors, schemas, runtime boundaries, and tests. Local conventions decide
   organization. Installed package evidence decides API facts.
4. Read `references/critical-rules.md`, then only the task-specific references below.
5. Verify every uncertain import, signature, or behavior against the package installation visible to the target
   workspace before editing. Do not port v3 names from memory. Many were renamed or removed.
6. Implement the smallest pattern consistent with the project and run the narrowest test or typecheck covering the
   changed semantics.

## Evidence Order

Use the target workspace's manifest and lockfile to identify versions. Prefer, in order:

1. the installed package's `src/`, README, tests, and changelog.
2. its emitted declarations when source is not shipped.
3. the matching official package artifact or source tag.

For monorepo source, tests, or cross-package search, run `scripts/effect-source.sh`. It keeps a cached clone of
`Effect-TS/effect` checked out at the newest release, fetching at most once per 24 hours and otherwise reusing the
cache, and prints `path=` and `release=`. When `release` differs from the installed `effect` version, read the matching
tag without checking it out: `git -C <path> grep <pattern> effect@<version> -- packages/` or
