# accessibility-auditor

The skill reviews your markup for accessibility and repairs it: semantics, ARIA, keyboard flow, contrast. Useful before shipping a form or a modal.

## What it does

The audit follows WCAG 2.1. It starts by finding issues in existing code, then checks them against the success criteria for levels A, AA and AAA. From there it rewrites markup: swaps `div` for semantic elements, adds landmarks (`header`, `nav`, `main`, `footer`) and keeps heading levels in order without gaps.

You get ready React and TypeScript patterns. A modal with `role="dialog"`, `aria-modal` and focus restore. Tabs that respond to arrow keys, `Home` and `End`. Buttons with `role="button"` that handle `Enter` and space. Keyboard navigation and screen reader verification are separate steps in the workflow.

The skill does not run linters or axe on its own. Automated and manual testing are listed as steps you carry out yourself, so budget time for them instead of expecting a finished report from the agent.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill accessibility-auditor -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/accessibility-auditor/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/accessibility-auditor/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill accessibility-auditor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/accessibility-auditor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill accessibility-auditor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/accessibility-auditor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills accessibility-auditor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/accessibility-auditor/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill accessibility-auditor -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path frontend/accessibility-auditor
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/accessibility-auditor/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill accessibility-auditor -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills/tree/HEAD/frontend/accessibility-auditor/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find accessibility issues in existing markup
- bring a page up to WCAG 2.1 level AA
- replace `div` soup with semantic elements and landmarks
- give a modal focus trapping and `Escape` to close
- make tabs switch with arrow keys

## Example prompts
- run an accessibility audit on the checkout page
- do an a11y review of the Modal component and fix what you find
- check keyboard navigation in the dropdown menu

# Accessibility Auditor

Build inclusive web experiences with WCAG 2.1 compliance and comprehensive a11y patterns.

## Core Workflow

1. **Audit existing code**: Identify accessibility issues
2. **Check WCAG compliance**: Verify against success criteria
3. **Fix semantic HTML**: Use proper elements and landmarks
4. **Add ARIA attributes**: Enhance assistive technology support
5. **Implement keyboard nav**: Ensure full keyboard accessibility
6. **Test with tools**: Automated and manual testing
7. **Verify with screen readers**: Real-world testing

## WCAG 2.1 Quick Reference

### Compliance Levels

| Level | Description | Requirement |
|-------|-------------|-------------|
| A | Minimum accessibility | Must have |
| AA | Standard compliance | Industry standard |
| AAA | Enhanced accessibility | Nice to have |

### Four Principles (POUR)

1. **Perceivable**: Content must be presentable to all senses
2. **Operable**: Interface must be navigable by all users
3. **Understandable**: Content must be clear and predictable
4. **Robust**: Content must work with assistive technologies

## Semantic HTML

### Use Proper Elements

```html
<!-- Bad: Divs for everything -->
<div class="header">
  <div class="nav">
    <div onclick="navigate()">Home</div>
  </div>
</div>
<!-- Good: Semantic elements -->
<header>
  <nav aria-label="Main navigation">
    <a href="/">Home</a>
  </nav>
</header>
```

### Document Landmarks

```html
<body>
  <header>
    <nav aria-label="Main">...</nav>
  </header>
  <main id="main-content">
    <article>
      <h1>Page Title</h1>
      <section aria-labelledby="section-heading">
        <h2 id="section-heading">Section</h2>
      </section>
    </article>
    <aside aria-label="Related content">...</aside>
  </main>
  <footer>...</footer>
</body>
```

### Heading Hierarchy

```html
<!-- Correct heading order -->
<h1>Page Title</h1>
  <h2>Section</h2>
    <h3>Subsection</h3>
    <h3>Subsection</h3>
  <h2>Section</h2>
    <h3>Subsection</h3>
<!-- Never skip levels -->
<!-- Bad: h1 → h3 (skipped h2) -->
```

## ARIA Patterns

### Buttons

```tsx
// Interactive element that looks like a button
<button type="button" onClick={handleClick}>
  Click me
</button>
// If you must use a div (avoid if possible)
<div
  role="button"
  tabIndex={0}
  onClick={handleClick}
  onKeyDown={(e) => {
    if (e.key === 'Enter' || e.key === ' ') {
      e.preventDefault();
      handleClick();
    }
  }}
>
  Click me
</div>
```

### Modals / Dialogs

```tsx
````
