## What it does

The skill sends your query to Valyu's semantic search and returns full patent records: claims, description, technical details and image links where available. You write the question as-is, no search parameters to build. Output is JSON with title, URL, content and a relevance score, so piping it through `jq` to pull single fields works fine.

Two files sit inside: a bash wrapper `scripts/search` and a Node.js CLI `search.mjs`. No external dependencies, requests go through the built-in `fetch()`. You need Node.js 18+ and a Valyu API key. Without a key the search comes back with `"setup_required": true`, and you pass the key with `scripts/search setup <api-key>` before retrying.

The script path depends on where the skill was installed, so before the first run you locate it with `find` under the plugins cache and use the full path. No Valyu key means no results at all, and the free credits cover your first queries. For embedding the search into your own app there are Valyu SDKs for Python and TypeScript.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yorkeccak/scientific-skills --skill patents-search -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/patents-search/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/patents-search/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yorkeccak/scientific-skills --skill patents-search -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/patents-search/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yorkeccak/scientific-skills --skill patents-search -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/patents-search/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yorkeccak/scientific-skills patents-search
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/patents-search/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yorkeccak/scientific-skills --skill patents-search -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yorkeccak/scientific-skills --path skills/patents-search
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/patents-search/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yorkeccak/scientific-skills --skill patents-search -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yorkeccak/scientific-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/patents-search/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find prior art from a technology description
- map patents across a research area
- track what competitors are filing
- check for blocking patents before launch
- read and interpret patent claims

## Example prompts
- Search patents on CRISPR gene editing methods, first 15 results.
- Find prior art on lithium ion battery electrode materials, 50 patents.
- Show competitor patents on CAR-T cell therapy manufacturing, 20 results.

# Patents Search

Search the complete global patent database using natural language queries powered by Valyu's semantic search API.

## Why This Skill is Powerful

- **No API Parameter Parsing**: Just pass natural language queries directly - no need to construct complex search parameters
- **Semantic Search**: Understands the meaning of your query, not just keyword matching
- **Full-Text Access**: Returns complete patent information including claims, descriptions, and technical details
- **Image Links**: Includes patent diagrams and figures when available
- **Comprehensive Coverage**: Access to global patent data across jurisdictions

## Requirements

1. Node.js 18+ (uses built-in fetch)
2. Valyu API key from https://platform.valyu.ai ($10 free credits)

## CRITICAL: Script Path Resolution

The `scripts/search` commands in this documentation are relative to this skill's installation directory.

Before running any command, locate the script using:

```bash
PATENTS_SCRIPT=$(find ~/.claude/plugins/cache -name "search" -path "*/patents-search/*/scripts/*" -type f 2>/dev/null | head -1)
```

Then use the full path for all commands:
```bash
$PATENTS_SCRIPT "CRISPR gene editing methods" 15
```

## API Key Setup Flow

When you run a search and receive `"setup_required": true`, follow this flow:

1. **Ask the user for their API key:**
   "To search patents, I need your Valyu API key. Get one free ($10 credits) at https://platform.valyu.ai"

2. **Once the user provides the key, run:**
   ```bash
   scripts/search setup <api-key>
   ```

3. **Retry the original search.**

## When to Use This Skill

- Prior art searching and patent landscaping
- Technology trend analysis
- Competitor innovation tracking
- Patent freedom-to-operate analysis
- Patent claim analysis and interpretation
- Patent filing strategy research
## Output Format

```json
{
  "success": true,
  "type": "patents_search",
  "query": "CRISPR gene editing methods",
  "result_count": 10,
  "results": [
    {
      "title": "Patent Title",
      "url": "https://patents.google.com/...",
      "content": "Patent claims, description, technical details...",
      "source": "patents",
      "relevance_score": 0.95,
      "images": ["https://example.com/diagram.png"]
    }
  ],
  "cost": 0.025
}
```

## Processing Results

### With jq

```bash
# Get patent titles
scripts/search "query" 10 | jq -r '.results[].title'
# Get URLs
