## What it does

The skill restructures partner ladders like registered, silver, and gold tiers. It opens with a step-by-step interview covering partner mix, revenue concentration, and sales cycle length. Deal-registration protection windows are sized at 75% or more of the sales cycle, preventing under-protected partner pipeline.

It guides you through three tier mechanics: volume, engagement, or points pathways. Engagement serves as the recommended default. Pure volume thresholds fail for non-transacting partners like ISVs or agencies because revenue is a lagging indicator. Criteria are backtested directly against the existing partner roster before pricing any tier benefits.

This skill only handles tier design for live B2B partner programs. If you need to build a channel program from zero, use `mbfinotti/partnerships-skills@partner-channel-program` instead. Affiliate commission payout tiers are also kept outside this skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-tiering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/partner-tiering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/partner-tiering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-tiering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/partner-tiering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-tiering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/partner-tiering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/partnerships-skills partner-tiering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/partner-tiering/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-tiering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --path skills/partner-tiering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/partner-tiering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-tiering -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- define qualification and demotion criteria for B2B partner tiers
- select between volume, engagement, and points pathway tier mechanics
- backtest proposed tier thresholds against the current partner base
- calculate deal registration protection windows from sales cycle length

## Example prompts
- Redesign our B2B partner tiers for resellers and MSPs
- Help set up demotion rules and engagement criteria for our gold tier
- Backtest a 3-tier structure against our current partner revenue data

name: partner-tiering
description: Design or redesign the tier structure inside an existing B2B partner program - qualification criteria, benefit bundles, tier count, promotion and demotion rules, review cadence for registered/silver/gold-style ladders, and migration of the current partner base. Also covers the B2C affiliate, creator and loyalty tier contrast. Use whenever the user mentions partner tiers, tier criteria, tier benefits, tier compression, demotion rules, or reseller, MSP and agency tier design, even if they never say tiering. Do NOT use for standing up a partner program from scratch - use mbfinotti/partnerships-skills@partner-channel-program instead. Affiliate commission payout tiers are a separate skill.

# Partner Tiering

Define the criteria and benefits that separate partner tiers inside an existing B2B partner program. No single canonical tier-design methodology exists - say so plainly rather than invent one. What the field actually offers:

- **Forrester's 3-tier norm**: tiering is used by 98% of top IT partner programs, averaging three tiers named "good, better, best" (analyst assertion, not raw survey data).
- **The Alexander Group's three tier mechanics**: volume, engagement, or engagement pathways (points accumulated across multiple dimensions) - the first structural choice a designer makes.
- **Forrester's Channel Partner Segmentation Matrix** (Stephanie Sissler, Feb 2023): a 3x3 current-performance x future-potential grid, explicitly an internal overlay on a public tier ladder, never a replacement for it.
- **Jay McBain's critique** (an attributed practitioner viewpoint, not a framework): revenue is a lagging indicator, and non-transacting partners - tech/ISV, referral, advisory - structurally don't fit a revenue ladder.

## Interview

Ask before designing anything, one question per message. Offer multiple-choice options. Skip whatever the user already answered.

- How many partners, and of which types - reseller, MSP, agency, ISV/tech, referral? Which types actually transact?
- What are the current tiers, their criteria, and the current distribution - how many partners sit in each?
- What is the specific pain: top tier crowded, nobody advancing, benefits ignored, long tail neglected, channel conflict?
- How concentrated is partner-sourced revenue - roughly what share comes from the top 10-20% of partners?
- What does each tier cost to serve today: margin give, deal-registration uplift, MDF, PAM headcount?
- What is the review cadence today, and is demotion actually enforced?
