## What it does

The skill runs an interview before any strategy work: business type, deployment model, price band, current sales channels, where target buyers' procurement sits, who owns the decision, and the effort ceiling. Questions come one per message, with multiple-choice answers where possible.

Then comes a readiness gate that is allowed to answer "not yet". Disqualifiers: the direct motion is not yet repeatable, margin cannot absorb the take rate plus cost-to-serve, there is no named owner or executive sponsor, or operational capacity is missing with no budget to build it. Take rate follows the deployment model: 3% for a SaaS listing versus 20% for a server, AMI, container or ML image on AWS Marketplace — that gap decides the gate on its own.

The output is a Marketplace Strategy memo an executive funds, not execution work. Listing-form content, store optimization and ad tactics belong elsewhere. Per-partner economics and joint GTM plans hand off to sibling skills. For choosing which partner category to launch next, there is a separate skill, `partner-ecosystem-expansion`.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS, Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-marketplace-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/partner-marketplace-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/partner-marketplace-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-marketplace-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/partner-marketplace-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-marketplace-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/partner-marketplace-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/partnerships-skills partner-marketplace-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/partner-marketplace-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-marketplace-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --path skills/partner-marketplace-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/partner-marketplace-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-marketplace-strategy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- decide which third-party marketplaces to list on
- size the investment for each platform
- estimate expected ROI from a listing
- set the condition that ends a listing
- check team readiness before committing

## Example prompts
- Help me pick which marketplaces we should list on this quarter
- Work out the ROI of an AWS Marketplace listing and tell me if it's worth it
- When should we delist from this platform? Walk through our situation

name: partner-marketplace-strategy
description: Decide which third-party marketplaces to list on, how much to invest in each, what ROI to expect, and when to delist - marketplace prioritization for partner teams. Covers cloud marketplace listing strategy, SaaS app store and integration directory prioritization, and retail marketplace selection for ecommerce (1P vs 3P vs hybrid), with a readiness gate, weighted scorecard, and provenance-flagged ROI expectations. Use whenever the user mentions AWS, Azure or GCP marketplaces, an app store listing, an integration directory, or asks whether a marketplace listing is worth it, even if they never say marketplace strategy. Do NOT use for choosing which partner category to launch next - use mbfinotti/partnerships-skills@partner-ecosystem-expansion instead.

# Partner Marketplace Strategy

Set the strategy for listing on third-party marketplaces: which ones, how deep, in what order, with what investment, and the condition that ends it. The working method assembles:

- The list → transact → co-sell → scale capability ladder (broad B2B practitioner consensus).
- Tackle's Cloud GTM Maturity Model (vendor-authored, it sells stage-by-stage tooling).
- McFadyen Digital's Marketplace Maturity Model (consultancy-authored, B2C).
- For reading the vendor landscape: the Canalys Global Co-Sell Software Leadership Matrix, IDC MarketScape marketplace assessments, and Gartner's PERM market guide (independent analyst), plus Jay McBain's ecosystem work as the most credible individual voice.

No framework in this field has independent longitudinal validation. Every staged model is authored by a party selling the journey: use them as structure, not as evidence.

The output is a decision artifact an executive funds: the Marketplace Strategy memo, never execution work.

- Listing-form content, store optimization, and ad tactics belong elsewhere.
- Per-partner economics, named-alliance ranking, and joint GTM plans hand off to sibling skills (see Reference).

## Interview

Ask before strategizing. Ask one question per message, and offer multiple-choice answers when possible. Skip a question only when the user already gave the answer.

- B2B software, consumer brand, or hybrid?
