# partner-ecosystem-expansion

A skill that decides which partner categories to add next and in what order. Useful when the ecosystem exists but the next launch is unclear.

## What it does

The skill runs an interview first, then builds a staged roadmap: which partner categories to launch first, which to hold, and what signals should kill a category. Categories sit in three buckets — influence, transact, retain-and-deliver — with consumer-side options like retail, licensing and co-branding alongside them.

Reference files cover category economics, readiness and capacity gates, and sequencing frameworks. The skill states plainly that no validated optimal sequence exists, and flags the provenance of every benchmark it uses. Before sequencing anything it fixes capacity numbers: partners per manager, enablement bandwidth, budget. A sequence without those is a wish list.

Scope is categories only. It will not rank named companies — the author points to the sibling skill `alliance-prioritization` for that. One more thing: if there is no map of the current ecosystem or an honest description of the partner mix, the skill routes you to build that picture first. So have it ready.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-ecosystem-expansion -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/partner-ecosystem-expansion/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/partner-ecosystem-expansion/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-ecosystem-expansion -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/partner-ecosystem-expansion/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-ecosystem-expansion -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/partner-ecosystem-expansion/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/partnerships-skills partner-ecosystem-expansion
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/partner-ecosystem-expansion/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-ecosystem-expansion -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --path skills/partner-ecosystem-expansion
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/partner-ecosystem-expansion/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-ecosystem-expansion -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mbfinotti/partnerships-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/partner-ecosystem-expansion/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick which partner category to launch next
- order category launches behind readiness gates
- work out how many partners the team can carry
- set kill criteria for a category that is not producing
- tell a proven category apart from a half-built stub

## Example prompts
- Help me plan partner ecosystem expansion: which categories to add and in what order
- We have resellers live and want to add MSP and marketplace — what should launch first?
- Build a 24-month partner mix roadmap with capacity gates

description: Decide which partner categories to add next to a partner ecosystem and in what sequence - a staged partner-category expansion roadmap with readiness gates, capacity limits, and kill criteria. Covers B2B categories (tech/ISV, reseller/VAR, MSP, SI/GSI, agency, referral/affiliate, marketplace) and consumer-side equivalents (retail/wholesale, creator, licensing, co-branding). Use whenever the user mentions partner ecosystem expansion, partner category planning, a partner mix roadmap, or asks which partner type to launch next, even if they never say expansion. Category-level sequencing only. Do NOT use for ranking named candidate companies - use mbfinotti/partnerships-skills@alliance-prioritization instead.

# Partner Ecosystem Expansion

Plan which categories of partner to add next and in what order, as a staged roadmap with gates.

Be honest about the evidence before anything else:

- No peer-reviewed optimal partner-category sequence exists.
- Most published "frameworks" for this decision are borrowed strategy grids force-fit onto channels.
- Nearly every quoted benchmark comes from a vendor or consultant that profits when the number looks good.

What the evidence genuinely supports:

- **Adner's minimum viable ecosystem (MVE) + staged expansion + value blueprint** (_The Wide Lens_; _Winning the Right Game_) - the one framework designed for exactly this problem: prove the smallest partner configuration that evidences joint value, then add categories in a deliberate order, gated on evidence.
- **The alliance-portfolio-diversity inverted-U** (Jiang, Tao & Santoro 2010, _SMJ_; Lee et al. 2017 meta-analysis) - the field's only independent evidence: partner-type diversity helps firm performance up to a point, then coordination and governance costs dominate. It argues for restraint and sequencing; it prescribes no order.
- **Operational coverage/capacity math and stage-gate pilots** - unbranded, but the actual working method: gate every category on capacity, not enthusiasm.
