# partner-economics

Models a single partner relationship as a small P&L: margin, cost-to-serve, partner CAC against direct CAC. Tells you whether to sign, scale, renegotiate or exit.

## What it does

The skill turns one partnership into a small P&L: attributable revenue net of every partner cost, set against partner CAC, ramp and incrementality. It opens with an interview — one question per message — covering partner type, whose economics to model, which decision the model must serve and its go/no-go threshold, the deadline for a verdict, whether a finance reviewer is assigned, and whether the partner will open its own numbers.

The workflow then splits partner-sourced, partner-influenced and partner-attached revenue, and never blends them. Influence credit gets capped so attributed revenue can't exceed total revenue. Costs are built fully loaded: discount off list, rebates and SPIFFs, MDF, marketplace fee, account-manager time, enablement and certification delivery, support, portal and tooling. Lifetime value is computed on gross margin, not on revenue.

The skill is blunt about the field itself: no canonical partner P&L template exists, and the most-quoted partner benchmarks are vendor marketing rather than research. Every figure gets an evidence class, and nothing is quoted as settled fact without a named source. One practical catch — if you don't have your current direct CAC and the average deal size it buys, there is no threshold to test the partner CAC against. For ranking a portfolio of candidates, use `alliance-prioritization` from the same repository instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-economics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/partner-economics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/partner-economics/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-economics -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/partner-economics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill partner-economics -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/partner-economics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/partnerships-skills partner-economics
```

```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/partner-economics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash

## When to use it
- work out whether one partner pays off after discounts and MDF
- compare partner CAC with direct CAC on a like-for-like basis
- break down the margin stack: rebates, SPIFFs, marketplace fee
- decide whether to renegotiate terms or exit a partnership
- separate partner-sourced revenue from merely attributed revenue

## Example prompts
- model the unit economics of this reseller partner: margin, cost-to-serve, payback
- compare partner CAC against our direct CAC for this deal
- break down the margin stack for the marketplace partner and tell me if we should sign

# Partner Economics

Model one partner relationship as a small P&L - attributable revenue net of every partner cost, against partner CAC, ramp, and incrementality - to decide sign, scale, renegotiate, or prune. Two structural facts frame the whole exercise; state them plainly rather than paper over them:

- **No canonical "partner P&L" template exists.** Practitioners converge on the same revenue and cost components, but vendors publish incompatible definitions, and any claim to _the_ standard (PARTNERNOMICS-style certification included) is a proprietary product, not industry consensus.
- **Most widely quoted partner benchmarks are vendor marketing, not research.** The famous "80% of channel revenue from 20% of partners / only 11% hit incentive goals" figures are untraceable; so are the "most partners never transact" claims. Label every number's evidence class; quote nothing as settled fact without a named source. Read [references/benchmarks-and-figure-grading.md](references/benchmarks-and-figure-grading.md) before citing any figure: the graded benchmark set, plus the untraceable figures to refuse.

What the field genuinely offers:
