## What it does

Reach for this skill when you want Parallel search, extraction and deep research inside your agent but the CLI is not set up yet. It checks for the binary with `command -v parallel-cli` and, if it is missing, installs it one of four ways: `brew` on macOS, `uv tool install`, `npm install -g` or `pipx`. Version 0.9.2 or newer is required, and the upgrade path depends on how the CLI was installed — the skill inspects the symlink target to tell them apart.

Authentication comes next. `parallel-cli auth --json` reports whether you are signed in; if not, `parallel-cli login --json` starts device OAuth, printing a code you enter in the browser. Add `--no-browser` on a headless session. Then the skill reads the balance with `parallel-cli balance get` and, when it is zero, suggests topping up via `parallel-cli balance add <AMOUNT_IN_CENTS>`. A payment method has to be attached to the organization first.

The last two steps are `parallel-cli skills install` and a nudge toward a first run. One caveat: if your agent does not hot reload skills, restart it after the install.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parallel-web/parallel-agent-skills --skill parallel-cli-setup -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/parallel-cli-setup/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/parallel-cli-setup/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parallel-web/parallel-agent-skills --skill parallel-cli-setup -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/parallel-cli-setup/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parallel-web/parallel-agent-skills --skill parallel-cli-setup -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/parallel-cli-setup/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install parallel-web/parallel-agent-skills parallel-cli-setup
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/parallel-cli-setup/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parallel-web/parallel-agent-skills --skill parallel-cli-setup -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/parallel-web/parallel-agent-skills --path skills/parallel-cli-setup
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/parallel-cli-setup/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parallel-web/parallel-agent-skills --skill parallel-cli-setup -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/parallel-web/parallel-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/parallel-cli-setup/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- install `parallel-cli` without picking between four install methods by hand
- sign in to Parallel through device OAuth, including on a headless box
- check the balance and top it up when it reads zero
- upgrade the CLI to 0.9.2 or newer without breaking the existing install
- pull in the remaining Parallel skills with one command

## Example prompts
- Set up parallel-cli from scratch: install it, log me in and check the balance
- Check whether I'm authenticated with parallel-cli and start the login if not
- Install the Parallel skills and tell me what to run first

# Parallel CLI Setup

Set up or maintain `parallel-cli` with minimal friction. If you are running this prompt, your goal is to follow the instructions below and set up `parallel-cli` for the user so that they can execute searches, run extracts, deep research, etc.

## Step 1: Install or upgrade the CLI

Check whether the CLI exists:

```bash
command -v parallel-cli
```

If missing, install with any of these methods:

1. macOS only: `brew install parallel-web/tap/parallel-cli`
2. Linux/macOS/Windows (uv): `uv tool install "parallel-web-tools[cli]"`
3. Linux/macOS/Windows (npm): `npm install -g parallel-web-cli`
4. Linux/macOS/Windows (pipx): `pipx install "parallel-web-tools[cli]" && pipx ensurepath`

When `parallel-cli` is present, require version `>=0.9.2`. If older, identify the install method before advising an update. Use `command -v parallel-cli`, then inspect `readlink "$(command -v parallel-cli)"` if it is a symlink. Paths under `~/.local/share/uv/
  tools/` indicate `uv tool install`; paths under `~/.local/share/parallel-cli/` indicate the standalone installer.

Upgrade commands (choose based on how it was installed):

- standalone: `parallel-cli update`
- uv: `uv tool upgrade parallel-web-tools[cli]`
- pipx: `pipx upgrade parallel-web-tools[cli]`
- npm: `npm update -g parallel-web-cli`
- homebrew: `brew update && brew upgrade parallel-web/tap/parallel-cli`

## Step 2: Authenticate

Check auth status:

```bash
parallel-cli auth --json
```

You will get a response like:

```json
{
  "authenticated": true,
  "method": "oauth",
  "env_var_set": false,
  "has_stored_credentials": true,
  "stored_overridden_by_env": false,
  "token_file": "xxx",
  "version": 1,
  "selected_org_id": "legacy",
  "selected_org_name": null,
  "has_control_api_tokens": false
}
```

If `authenticated` is `false` or `selected_org_id` is `legacy`, prompt the user to log in:

```bash
parallel-cli login --json
```

If this is a headless session, append `--no-browser`.

This triggers device OAuth. The user will be prompted to go to a web browser and input the code the CLI outputs.

When invoking from an agent harness, prefer streaming stdout via a Monitor-style tool over blocking on completion.

The output will look like:

```json
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 73296ce134bf9a3b tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
