## What it does

paper-figure reads a figure plan from `PAPER_PLAN.md` and experiment data in JSON, CSV, or screen-log files. It maps data patterns to visualizations such as line plots, bar charts, scatter plots, heatmaps, box plots, and violin plots. It can also produce LaTeX comparison tables and combine plots into multi-panel figures.

For each planned figure, the skill creates a standalone Python script and a shared style configuration. Outputs go to `figures/`; the base format is `pdf` at `300 DPI`. Manually made figures are preserved, while architecture diagrams, generated-image grids, photographs, and screenshots must be prepared separately. Check for `PAPER_PLAN.md` and usable data before running it: when the plan is missing, the skill scans the project and asks which figures to generate.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill paper-figure -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/paper-figure/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/paper-figure/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill paper-figure -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/paper-figure/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill paper-figure -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/paper-figure/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep paper-figure
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/paper-figure/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill paper-figure -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/paper-figure
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/paper-figure/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill paper-figure -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- plot experiment results from JSON or CSV files
- compare methods in a LaTeX table
- combine plots into a multi-panel figure
- apply one visual style across paper figures
- separate auto-generated plots from manual diagrams

## Example prompts
- Generate the paper figures from `PAPER_PLAN.md` using the data in `figures/exp_results.json`.
- Create the LaTeX comparison table and plots for the experiment data in `figures/`.
- Scan the figure plan, write Python scripts for the data-driven figures, and save PDF outputs in `figures/`.

Generate all figures and tables for a paper based on: **$ARGUMENTS**

## Scope: What This Skill Can and Cannot Do

| Category | Can auto-generate? | Examples |
|----------|-------------------|----------|
| **Data-driven plots** | ✅ Yes | Line plots (training curves), bar charts (method comparison), scatter plots, heatmaps, box/violin plots |
| **Comparison tables** | ✅ Yes | LaTeX tables comparing prior bounds, method features, ablation results |
| **Multi-panel figures** | ✅ Yes | Subfigure grids combining multiple plots (e.g., 3×3 dataset × method) |
| **Architecture/pipeline diagrams** | ❌ No — manual | Model architecture, data flow diagrams, system overviews. At best can generate a rough TikZ skeleton, but **expect to draw these yourself** using tools like draw.io, Figma, or TikZ |
| **Generated image grids** | ❌ No — manual | Grids of generated samples (e.g., GAN/diffusion outputs). These come from running your model, not from this skill |
| **Photographs / screenshots** | ❌ No — manual | Real-world images, UI screenshots, qualitative examples |
