# grilling

Stress-tests technical plans, decisions, or ideas through scored multiple-choice questions. It helps uncover blind spots before writing code.

## What it does

The skill interviews the developer one question at a time, exploring each branch of the decision tree. It checks local environment facts on its own instead of asking trivial details. Every decision point gets recorded into session JSON. A Node.js runner then renders the questions into an interactive `session.html` page or prints `session.md` directly into the chat.

Answers can be pasted back as JSON from the rendered page or submitted as plain text replies in chat. The rendering step requires Node.js with the `--experimental-strip-types` flag. Without a properly resolved decision store via `resolve-store.sh`, the skill refuses to record session outcomes.

Once the interview concludes, the workflow writes every accepted decision to the local store and embeds rejection rationales into the target artifact. The bundled `check.sh` script validates session integrity and verifies that no unmerged records remain.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pandoscope/skills --skill grilling -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/grilling/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/grilling/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pandoscope/skills --skill grilling -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/grilling/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pandoscope/skills --skill grilling -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/grilling/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pandoscope/skills grilling
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/grilling/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pandoscope/skills --skill grilling -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pandoscope/skills --path derived/grilling
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/grilling/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pandoscope/skills --skill grilling -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- stress-test an architecture plan before implementation
- surface hidden assumptions using scored multiple-choice questions
- document reasons for rejecting alternative technical approaches
- export an interview session into an interactive HTML form or Markdown

## Example prompts
- Grill me on my database migration plan
- Use grilling to review this API design proposal
- 1, but actually because we need backward compatibility with older clients

# Grilling

Interview user until shared understanding. Walk every branch of decision tree, dependencies one by one. ONE question at a time — wait for answer before next. *Facts* findable in environment: look up, never ask. *Decisions* are user's — put each to user, wait. Do not act until user confirms.

Naming: question `S«s»Q«q»`, answer `S«s»Q«q»A«n»`.

## Steps

1. `resolve-store.sh path` — locates store harness already cloned. Resolve, never clone. Exits non-zero naming its own fix when store is unnamed, unresolved or absent; unnamed → say so out loud and record nothing (silent skip is indistinguishable from successful record). Store URL lives in environment only — never hardcoded, never echoed into artifacts.
2. `resolve-store.sh unmerged` — any records → refuse to open session until principal merges previous one, per [recording.md](recording.md).
3. `resolve-store.sh preferences` — emits active set as JSON array for session's `preferences`: copied, never retyped. Inject that set ONLY, never decision history.
4. Author every decision point as session JSON — whole session so far, answers included. Contract: `render/decision-context.ts` beside this file; semantics: [format.md](format.md). NEVER hand-format a question; renderer appends free-text slot itself.
5. Render both user-facing forms — validation failure names offending field; fix JSON, re-run:

   ```bash
   node --experimental-strip-types <skill-dir>/render/render.ts <session.json> --out <dir>
   ```

6. Publish `session.html` as artifact, redeploying same URL as session grows; unavailable → print `session.md` into chat verbatim — never as file attachment, never as timed dialog (dialogs close while user still typing).
7. Answers arrive as page's copied JSON pasted into chat, or as chat replies: answer id ("S1Q2A1" or "1"), correction via "N, but actually because …" — shorthand "N, BAB …". No live page-to-agent channel yet (pandoscope/skills#139). What answers mean: [reading.md](reading.md). Follow-ups: append new questions plus answers received, re-render; user may revisit earlier answers.
8. Session end: record every ruling to store, embed rejection reasons in session's target artifact, per [recording.md](recording.md).
