## What it does

The skill manages the metadata lifecycle: page inventory, canonical tags, robots directives, hreflang, Open Graph, and Twitter Cards. It reads the root `contextus.md` when present and audits metadata using real production evidence alongside codebase templates.

It does not rewrite H1–H6 headings. When heading copy requires changes, it routes the task to `heading-structure`. If it identifies keyword cannibalization, it only reports conflicting URLs without modifying page roles. Structural content changes remain manual.

Pre-release validation requires inspecting the raw server-rendered HTML response. Checking a browser DOM snapshot is insufficient because search crawlers can receive different HTML markup.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill page-metadata -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill metadata -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/metadata/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/metadata/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill metadata -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/metadata/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill metadata -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/metadata/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kostja94/marketing-skills metadata
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/metadata/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill metadata -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills --path skills/seo/on-page/metadata
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/metadata/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill metadata -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- audit site-wide metadata across canonical, robots, and social tags
- inspect raw server HTML for missing or duplicate meta tags
- detect keyword cannibalization and overlapping search intent
- validate multi-locale hreflang and Open Graph consistency

## Example prompts
- Run a full metadata audit across our marketing routes and verify canonical tags
- Check raw server HTML output for hreflang and Open Graph consistency before release
- Evaluate meta descriptions with the swap test to catch duplicated template copy

# SEO On-Page: Page Metadata

Orchestrates the complete metadata lifecycle. It owns scope, routing, implementation, validation, and delivery; specialist skills own their individual writing and tag rules.

**When invoking**: On first use, briefly state the scope and which specialist skills are needed. Then work from current production evidence and the real source of truth rather than producing a detached copy sheet.

## Ownership and boundaries

| Concern | Owner |
|---|---|
| Lifecycle, page inventory, implementation, validation, delivery | **page-metadata** |
| `<title>` writing and review | **title-tag** |
| Meta description writing and review | **meta-description** |
| H1-H6 writing and hierarchy | **heading-structure** |
| Open Graph | **open-graph** |
| X/Twitter Cards | **twitter-cards** |
| Canonical URL | **canonical-tag** |
| Localization | **localization-strategy**, **translation** |
| Post-release query and CTR observation | **google-search-console** |

This skill may check H1 and body coverage to confirm that metadata promises are fulfilled. It must not rewrite H1-H6; route that work to **heading-structure**. It may report keyword cannibalization, but must not merge pages, change page roles, delete URLs, or redistribute target keywords.

## Required inputs and evidence

Read root `contextus.md` when present and load only relevant modules. Otherwise use project documentation and verified product facts. Establish:

1. Target site, locales, environment, and release scope.
2. Page inventory from production navigation, footer, contextual links, index or hub pages, robots.txt, sitemap, production URLs, and application routes. A sitemap is evidence, not a complete inventory guarantee. For very large generated page families, inspect the template and representative examples instead of enumerating every URL.
3. Page type, unique job, primary search intent, target query evidence, audience, and page-specific facts.
4. Current production output: title, description, H1, canonical, robots, hreflang, OG, Twitter Cards, HTTP status, and server-returned HTML.
5. Actual maintenance source: framework metadata API, layout template, route module, static HTML, JSON/YAML, CMS fields, server injection, or proxy layer.
