# page-mascot

Puts a chibi character on your page that turns its head toward the pointer and reacts to clicks. Wires up a <Mascot /> React component from ready sprite sheets or draws a new one.

## What it does

This skill turns "put a fox on my page" into a working component. Every character is two 3×3 sprite sheets: nine head directions and nine expressions. The component swaps between them by moving `background-position`, so there is no per-frame JavaScript and no animation library. A character is just its two files — no registry, nothing has to know its name.

Two routes. If the user names a character, the skill picks from the fifty-two drawn ones, fetches both sheets into `public/mascots/` and installs the component with `npm i page-mascot`, or copies `mascot.tsx` into the project. No Python, no API key. If the user wants something new or their own likeness, the skill draws it with a built-in image tool, through `OPENAI_API_KEY`, or by hand from prompts, then builds the atlases and checks the sprites do not jump.

The build needs Python 3 with `PIL`, `numpy` and `scipy`; the check is `python3 -c "import PIL, numpy, scipy"`. If it fails, install from `requirements.txt` and say so instead of working around it. Claude has no built-in image generator, so drawing a new character there only works with an `OPENAI_API_KEY`; without one you are left with a drawn character or the manual prompt route. Both `directions` and `reactions` props are required, and `size` defaults to 140.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add nilbuild/page-mascot --skill page-mascot -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/page-mascot/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/page-mascot/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add nilbuild/page-mascot --skill page-mascot -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/page-mascot/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add nilbuild/page-mascot --skill page-mascot -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/page-mascot/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install nilbuild/page-mascot page-mascot
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/page-mascot/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add nilbuild/page-mascot --skill page-mascot -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/nilbuild/page-mascot --path skills/page-mascot
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/page-mascot/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add nilbuild/page-mascot --skill page-mascot -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/nilbuild/page-mascot/tree/HEAD/skills/page-mascot/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add a mascot to a page without an animation library
- wire a ready chibi character into a React project
- draw a new character from a description and build its sprite atlases
- redraw a character from a photo of the user
- verify the sprite sheets stay aligned when they switch

## Example prompts
- put a fox on my page
- draw me a chibi otter and put it in the hero
- redraw this character from ~/photo.jpg

description: Put a cursor-tracking mascot on a page -- a chibi character that turns its head toward the pointer and reacts when clicked. Picks one of the fifty-two drawn characters and wires up the React component, or draws a new one (with your own image tool, the OpenAI images API, or from a photo of the user), builds its two sprite sheets into aligned atlases and verifies they do not jump. Use when the user asks for a mascot, a character that watches the cursor, a portfolio head, wants one of the existing characters on their page, or wants a new character drawn.

# Mascot

Turns "put a fox on my page" or "draw me a chibi otter" into a working `<Mascot />`.

Each character is two 3×3 sprite sheets: nine head directions, and nine expressions. The
component swaps between them by moving `background-position`, so there is no per-frame
JavaScript and no animation library. A character is its two files -- there is no registry
and nothing has to know its name.

## Which route

- **The user names a character, or would take one that exists** -- *Use one that is
  drawn*. No Python, no API key, works in any React project. This is the common case.
- **The user wants something new, or their own likeness** -- *Draw a new one*, then
  finish with *Put it on the page*.

Both routes end in *Put it on the page*. Do not stop at files and a snippet.

## Use one that is drawn

1. **Pick.** `reference/characters.md` lists the fifty-two. If the user did not name one,
   pick the one that fits the site, and say which you picked and why.

2. **Fetch the two sheets** into wherever this project serves static files -- `public/`
   for Next, Vite, CRA and Astro, `static/` for SvelteKit -- or next to the component to
   import them:

   ```bash
   mkdir -p public/mascots
   curl -fsSL -o public/mascots/fox-directions.webp https://koboyo.com/page-mascot/mascots/fox-directions.webp
   curl -fsSL -o public/mascots/fox-reactions.webp  https://koboyo.com/page-mascot/mascots/fox-reactions.webp
   ```

3. **Put it on the page** (below).

## Put it on the page

**Install the component.** Use whichever package manager the lockfile points at:
`npm i page-mascot`, `pnpm add page-mascot`, `yarn add page-mascot`, or
`bun add page-mascot`. If this is not a package-managed React project, copy `mascot.tsx`
from beside this SKILL.md into the project instead -- it is one file, needs only React,
and uses inline styles.

**Render it:**

```tsx
import { Mascot } from 'page-mascot'
<Mascot
  directions="/mascots/fox-directions.webp"
````
