## What it does

This skill serves as the source of truth for Elastic integration metadata. It inspects `manifest.yml` structures, version bumps in `changelog.yml`, and `conditions` blocks. Existing integrations in the Elastic repository often contain legacy patterns. Do not copy them. The skill expects adherence to current specifications.

Fleet variables exist across four levels, from the root manifest down to individual data streams. The skill prevents variable shadowing by blocking inner scopes from reusing parent variable names. Every Handlebars `{{var}}` placeholder must be declared in a manifest. Undeclared entries silently resolve to empty strings. Routing rules also require dynamic flags configured through nested YAML instead of dotted keys.

New packages default to `format_version: "3.4.2"`. Never bump this version without needing new features. An unnecessary bump breaks backward compatibility and forces an unneeded Kibana upgrade. Spec version `3.6.4` is reserved for integrations declaring `provider_permissions` and `var_groups`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/integration-skills --skill package-spec -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/package-spec/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/package-spec/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/integration-skills --skill package-spec -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/package-spec/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/integration-skills --skill package-spec -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/package-spec/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/integration-skills package-spec
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/package-spec/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/integration-skills --skill package-spec -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/integration-skills --path skills/package-spec
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/package-spec/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/integration-skills --skill package-spec -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- resolve `elastic-package lint` and `check` failures on package metadata
- select the lowest valid `format_version` for declared package features
- verify that Handlebars template variables exist in manifests
- prevent variable shadowing across Fleet policy templates and data streams
- format YAML structures correctly without invalid dot notation

## Example prompts
- Review manifest.yml in this Elastic integration package for spec compliance
- Determine the minimum format_version needed for my routing_rules configuration
- Debug this elastic-package lint error about variable shadowing in policy_templates

## Skill authority

The rules and patterns defined in this skill and its reference files are the **authoritative source of truth**. When examining existing integrations in the `elastic/integrations` repository for reference, you may encounter patterns that conflict with what is specified here -- many integrations contain legacy patterns that predate current standards. **Always follow this skill over patterns observed in other integrations.** If a reference integration uses a deprecated or prohibited pattern, do not copy it.

## When to use

Use this skill when tasks include:
- building or reviewing `manifest.yml` at root or data stream level
- adding or validating `changelog.yml` entries
- selecting the correct change type and semantic version bump
- configuring policy templates, inputs, and variable declarations
- declaring `var_groups` or `provider_permissions` (schema and floors)
- debugging `elastic-package lint` or `elastic-package check` errors on manifests or changelogs
- reviewing variable scoping across package, policy template, input, and data stream levels
- validating Handlebars template variables against manifest declarations
- configuring routing rules and their required manifest flags
- determining which `format_version` is needed for a package's features

## When NOT to use

- Package scaffolding and directory layout (`create-integration`)
- End-to-end Federated Identity / Cloud Connectors enablement on an AWS package (`input-configurations` -> `references/federated-identity-aws.md`)
- Ingest pipeline design (`ingest-pipelines`)
- Field mapping and ECS compliance (`ecs-field-mappings`)
- CEL programs (`cel-programs`)
- Transform configuration (see `review-integration` skill's `references/transform-guide.md`)
