## What it does

The skill covers the Outlines library from dottxt.ai and shows how to make a local model return data that matches a schema. Inside are Python examples: classification with `outlines.generate.choice`, field extraction into a Pydantic model with `outlines.generate.json`, regex generation, and numeric generators.

The mechanism is constrained token sampling. A schema becomes a context-free grammar, the grammar becomes a finite state machine, and invalid tokens get filtered at each step. Invalid output is impossible, and deterministic stretches of generation run faster.

Backends differ: Transformers, llama.cpp, vLLM, with limited OpenAI support. Local models need the libraries themselves — `outlines`, `transformers`, `vllm`, `pydantic`; the OpenAI backend needs an API key. If you already serve models through vLLM, the skill shows how to attach schemas without rewriting the pipeline.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill outlines -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/outlines/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/outlines/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill outlines -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/outlines/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill outlines -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/outlines/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs outlines
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/outlines/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill outlines -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 16-prompt-engineering/outlines
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/outlines/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill outlines -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- get valid JSON from a local model without retries
- extract fields straight into a Pydantic object
- restrict model output to a fixed list of values
- generate strings that match a regex, like phone numbers
- speed up inference by filtering invalid tokens

## Example prompts
- Show me how to get JSON from a Pydantic model with outlines
- Classify this review as positive/negative/neutral using outlines.generate.choice
- Wire outlines to vLLM and generate an object from a schema

# Outlines: Structured Text Generation

## When to Use This Skill

Use Outlines when you need to:
- **Guarantee valid JSON/XML/code** structure during generation
- **Use Pydantic models** for type-safe outputs
- **Support local models** (Transformers, llama.cpp, vLLM)
- **Maximize inference speed** with zero-overhead structured generation
- **Generate against JSON schemas** automatically
- **Control token sampling** at the grammar level

## Installation

```bash
# Base installation
pip install outlines
# With specific backends
pip install outlines transformers  # Hugging Face models
pip install outlines llama-cpp-python  # llama.cpp
pip install outlines vllm  # vLLM for high-throughput
```

## Quick Start

### Basic Example: Classification

```python
import outlines
from typing import Literal
# Load model
model = outlines.models.transformers("microsoft/Phi-3-mini-4k-instruct")
# Generate with type constraint
prompt = "Sentiment of 'This product is amazing!': "
generator = outlines.generate.choice(model, ["positive", "negative", "neutral"])
sentiment = generator(prompt)
print(sentiment)  # "positive" (guaranteed one of these)
```

### With Pydantic Models

```python
from pydantic import BaseModel
import outlines
class User(BaseModel):
    name: str
    age: int
    email: str
model = outlines.models.transformers("microsoft/Phi-3-mini-4k-instruct")
# Generate structured output
prompt = "Extract user: John Doe, 30 years old, john@example.com"
generator = outlines.generate.json(model, User)
user = generator(prompt)
print(user.name)   # "John Doe"
print(user.age)    # 30
print(user.email)  # "john@example.com"
```

## Core Concepts

### 1. Constrained Token Sampling

Outlines uses Finite State Machines (FSM) to constrain token generation at the logit level.

**How it works:**
1. Convert schema (JSON/Pydantic/regex) to context-free grammar (CFG)
2. Transform CFG into Finite State Machine (FSM)
3. Filter invalid tokens at each step during generation
4. Fast-forward when only one valid token exists

**Benefits:**
- **Zero overhead**: Filtering happens at token level
- **Speed improvement**: Fast-forward through deterministic paths
