## What it does

OTTL is a language for rewriting traces, metrics, logs, and profiles inside OpenTelemetry Collector components. This skill is anchored to collector-contrib v0.162.0 and knows which functions, paths, and feature gates apply at that release. If you run a different version, cross-check syntax against the corresponding upstream tag, since availability shifts between releases.

The skill guides you to pick the right context (span, resource, datapoint, and others), verify each function before use, set error handling deliberately (ignore, silent, propagate), and sidestep common mistakes—mishandled regex escaping in YAML, or calling `Base64Decode`, which was removed in v0.161. Built-in references cover contexts, function signatures, and recipes for each component type. For a single path or function, load only the relevant section rather than the full catalog.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ollygarden/opentelemetry-agent-skills --skill otel-ottl -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/otel-ottl/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/otel-ottl/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ollygarden/opentelemetry-agent-skills --skill otel-ottl -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/otel-ottl/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ollygarden/opentelemetry-agent-skills --skill otel-ottl -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/otel-ottl/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ollygarden/opentelemetry-agent-skills otel-ottl
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/otel-ottl/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ollygarden/opentelemetry-agent-skills --skill otel-ottl -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ollygarden/opentelemetry-agent-skills --path skills/otel-ottl
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/otel-ottl/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ollygarden/opentelemetry-agent-skills --skill otel-ottl -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- Write a tail_sampling filter condition based on resource or span attributes
- Rewrite log or metric attributes without breaking downstream pipeline stages
- Parse JSON from a log body and extract values for conditional routing
- Debug an OTTL syntax error or troubleshoot why an expression fails in your Collector version

## Example prompts
- Write a tail_sampling condition that keeps traces with errors or priority above 50
- Rename a span attribute key from `old_name` to `new_name` only if the value is not empty
- Help me parse JSON from logs and route records to different pipelines based on event type

# OpenTelemetry Transformation Language (OTTL)

OTTL transforms or selects telemetry inside Collector components. This skill is pinned to
collector-contrib **v0.162.0**. Function, path, default, and feature-gate availability varies by
release; when the user's version differs, verify against the matching upstream tag.

Dated OTTL feature-gate status for v0.162.0 and v0.163.0 is in
[references/functions.md](references/functions.md#feature-gates-verified-2026-10-15).

## Workflow

1. **Choose the component.** `transform` rewrites, `filter` drops, `tail_sampling` decides whether
   to retain traces, and `routing` sends telemetry to pipelines. A component controls its available
   contexts and functions.
2. **Choose the lowest usable context.** Lower contexts can read their parents (for example, a span
   can read `resource.attributes`), but parents cannot read children. Use `datapoint` for point
   attributes instead of traversing `metric.data_points`.
3. **Verify every emitted function, then write the statement.** Confirm each function's exact
   identifier and signature in [references/functions.md](references/functions.md). If an identifier
   is absent, treat it as unsupported instead of deriving or substituting a plausible name. An
   editor such as `set` or `delete_key` mutates data and may have a `where` condition. Converters
   such as `ParseJSON` and `IsMatch` return values; they do not mutate.
4. **Set error behavior deliberately.** `ignore` logs statement errors and continues; `silent`
   continues without logging; `propagate` returns the error and can cause the component to drop the
   payload. Transform and filter default to `ignore`; the transform default-error gate was removed in
   v0.162.0, so naming it in `--feature-gates` fails startup (history: the `otel-collector` skill's
   transform quirks), and the filter gate is stable and cannot be disabled. Routing also
   defaults to `ignore` while its beta default-error feature gate is enabled. For routing, `ignore`
   sends an errored payload to `default_pipelines`; configure that fallback or the payload is dropped.
