## What it does

The skill runs a 13-question intake interview to clarify company goals, stack dependencies, finance restrictions, and budget limits. It balances two distinct priorities: securing the software supply chain and earning developer credibility. Task progress and context get recorded in `devrel-context.md` so renewals do not restart from zero.

Your administrative capacity directly shapes the final plan. For example, if you can only spend a few hours a month on maintenance, the skill removes the employee-nominated fund option. A refusal to commit to multi-year agreements immediately cuts foundation memberships.

Do not confuse internal default starting figures with disclosed market rates. Presenting self-set defaults as verified industry pricing will get the portfolio rejected by finance. Keep in mind that maintainer fundraising and event sponsorships belong to separate skills in the author's suite.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill oss-sponsors-brand-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/oss-sponsors-brand-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/oss-sponsors-brand-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill oss-sponsors-brand-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/oss-sponsors-brand-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill oss-sponsors-brand-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/oss-sponsors-brand-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-relations-skills oss-sponsors-brand-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/oss-sponsors-brand-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill oss-sponsors-brand-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills --path skills/oss-sponsors-brand-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/oss-sponsors-brand-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill oss-sponsors-brand-strategy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- allocate corporate open-source sponsorship budgets across maintainers
- select between supply-chain security and developer relations mandates
- filter out unviable funding models based on team administrative limits
- establish renewal criteria and performance metrics for finance reviews

## Example prompts
- Help us build an open-source sponsorship budget using our lockfile
- Run the intake interview to design our corporate open-source funding program
- Set up renewal metrics and project allocation tiers for our OSS sponsors portfolio

description: Builds a company's open-source sponsorship portfolio - which projects and maintainers to fund, through which allocation model, at what amount each, and how to prove it worked. Use whenever a company, OSPO, DevRel lead or engineering leader asks which open-source projects to sponsor, how much to budget for open-source funding, whether sponsoring maintainers is worth it, how to run an employee-nominated FOSS fund, how to fund dependencies at scale, how to pick a sponsorship tier on a maintainer's ladder, or how to measure the return on money paid to maintainers - even if they only say they want to give back. Not the maintainer side of raising sponsorship - use samber/developer-relations-skills@oss-sponsors-fundraising. Not event sponsorship.

# OSS Sponsors Brand Strategy

You decide where a company's open-source money goes: what mandate it serves, which projects and maintainers receive it, how much each one gets, and what the company can honestly claim in return.

Hold two facts through every step:

- Sponsorship returns on two axes at once: "brand marketing, and securing our supply chain," in Sentry's David Cramer's words on the Open Source Pledge member page. The two mandates select different projects, so a portfolio that never picks a primary one optimizes for neither.
- Developer audiences read sponsorship as a signal about the company. Money that arrives with expectations of influence costs more trust than it buys.

Route the user elsewhere when this is the wrong table:

- A maintainer looking for sponsors → `samber/developer-relations-skills@oss-sponsors-fundraising`.
- Conference, meetup or hackathon sponsorship tiers → `samber/developer-relations-skills@developer-event-sponsorship`.

Every figure below carries one of two labels:

- **(published)**: a program that ran disclosed it. Figures drift, so re-check before quoting.
- **(self-set)**: this skill offers it as a starting default, never a market rate.

See [references/sourced-numbers.md](./references/sourced-numbers.md) for the source behind each figure. Never present a self-set default to a finance reviewer as a market rate; that is the claim that gets a portfolio sent back.

## Interview

Ask one question at a time, multiple-choice where you can, and stop once you know the mandate, the budget and the ecosystem. Confirm the rest as the portfolio takes shape.
