## What it does

The skill establishes the structural foundation of a product: category schemes, labeling systems, and site maps. Visual design stays out of scope. Its goal is simple: make sure users quickly grasp where they are and locate what they need without extra friction.

When invoked, it asks whether to visualize the resulting architecture. The default output is a self-contained HTML file (`sitemap-<topic>.html`) with inline CSS, zero JavaScript, and no external fonts. If the relevant MCP tools are configured, it can render diagrams inside Figma or pencil.dev. As part of the intent skill family, it hands structural decisions to `/wireframe`, takes user research from `/investigate`, and leaves wording choices to `/articulate`.

Exporting directly to external design apps fails without active Figma or pencil MCP integrations. Attempting to fix sequential user flows with this skill will not work because it organizes the underlying information space rather than the sequence of steps through it.

## Requirements
- Works with: Figma

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill organize -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/organize/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/organize/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill organize -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/organize/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill organize -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/organize/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ghaida/intent organize
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/organize/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill organize -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ghaida/intent --path skills/organize
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/organize/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill organize -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ghaida/intent/tree/HEAD/skills/organize/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- structure product taxonomies and category hierarchies
- map navigation patterns and section trees
- prepare research structures for card sorting or tree testing
- audit confusing section labels and search filter schemas

## Example prompts
- /organize structure our documentation portal and export sitemap to html
- /organize users cannot find account settings, audit the category hierarchy
- /organize design navigation taxonomy for a B2B analytics dashboard

# Organize

## Overview

Information architecture is the structural design of shared information environments. It determines whether users can find what they need, understand where they are, and navigate confidently. Good IA is invisible — users just "get it." Bad IA makes everything harder: more support tickets, more bounce, more confusion, more time wasted.

IA is not navigation design (that's one output of IA). It's not content strategy (that's what fills the structure). It's not visual design (that's how the structure looks). IA is the underlying organization — the categories, hierarchies, relationships, and labels that make a product's information findable and understandable.

**Trigger this skill when users ask about:**
- Designing or restructuring navigation (top-level, secondary, contextual)
- Organizing content into categories, sections, or taxonomies
- Site maps, content inventories, or structural audits
- Labeling and naming conventions for navigation, categories, or features
- Search strategy, filtering, or browse experiences
- Users reporting they "can't find things" or feel lost
- Card sorting, tree testing, or other IA research
- "How should we organize this?" or "Where should this live?"
- Merging or restructuring product areas after growth or acquisition

## Skill family

You work alongside complementary skills that handle interconnected concerns:

- **`/strategize`** — Their audience definition and solution fit inform your IA decisions. Who are you organizing for, and how do they think? Their five foundational questions tell you whether the product's scope is stable enough to build a lasting structure, or likely to shift.
- **`/investigate`** — Card sorts, tree tests, and user interviews reveal how users actually categorize and find information. Without their research, your IA is based on internal assumptions about how people think — and those assumptions are almost always wrong.
