# memory

Search a knowledge graph for earlier decisions, load session context, and inspect decision history. Use it when you need to recover what a project has already settled.

## What it does

The `search` subcommand looks up decisions, patterns, and entities in the knowledge graph. Use `load` to bring relevant context into a session, `history` to inspect the decision timeline, or `viz` to render a Mermaid graph. `status` checks the memory system.

For session context, the skill reads the project’s filesystem index first, then session continuation data, and queries the MCP server when needed. Graph operations require a configured memory MCP server. Claude Code 2.1.277 or later is also required.

Invoke the skill without a subcommand and it asks which operation you want. To save new decisions, use the separate `remember` skill; `memory` handles read-side operations.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill memory -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/memory/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/memory/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill memory -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/memory/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill memory -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/memory/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yonatangross/orchestkit memory
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/memory/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill memory -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yonatangross/orchestkit --path src/skills/memory
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/memory/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill memory -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- find a decision made earlier
- load project context at session start
- review the timeline of decisions
- render the knowledge graph as Mermaid
- check memory system health

## Example prompts
- Search memory for earlier pagination decisions: `search pagination`.
- Load memory context for this session: `load`.
- Show the decision history as a Mermaid diagram: `history --mermaid`.

# Memory - Read & Access Operations

Unified read-side memory skill with subcommands for searching, loading, syncing, history, and visualization.

> **Cross-session read strategy (Opus 5.5 / CC 2.1.111+):** Opus 5.5 reads filesystem memory reliably across sessions. When loading context at session start, prefer the layered read order:
> 1. `~/.claude/projects/<slug>/memory/MEMORY.md` (durable index — load first, always)
> 2. `.claude/chain/state.json` + most recent `NN-*.json` handoff (session continuation)
> 3. MCP `mcp__memory__search_nodes` for anything the filesystem index doesn't answer (typed graph traversal)
>
> Layer 1 is cheap (small index file), Layer 2 is scoped (session-specific), Layer 3 is selective (only when needed). Avoid dumping the full knowledge graph into context — use the index to narrow the search first.

## Argument Resolution

```python
SUBCOMMAND = "$ARGUMENTS[0]"  # First token: search, load, history, viz, status
QUERY = "$ARGUMENTS[1]"       # Second token onward: search query or flags
# $ARGUMENTS is the full string (CC 2.1.59 indexed access)
```

## Usage

```bash
memory search <query>  # Search knowledge graph
memory load             # Load context at session start
memory history          # View decision timeline
memory viz              # Visualize knowledge graph
memory status           # Show memory system health
```

---

## CRITICAL: Use AskUserQuestion When No Subcommand

If invoked without a subcommand, ask the user what they want:

```python
AskUserQuestion(
  questions=[{
    "question": "What memory operation do you need?",
    "header": "Operation",
    "options": [
      {"label": "search", "description": "Search decisions and patterns in knowledge graph"},
      {"label": "load", "description": "Load relevant context for this session"},
````
