## What it does

The skill covers interface design for specialists who live in a tool all day. Dispatchers, warehouse operators and planners know the software by heart, so the priorities flip: density and speed of action beat spaciousness and hand-holding.

Inside is a set of principles with examples. Compact table rows at 28–36px, secondary attributes such as status, type and date shown inline rather than on hover. Hierarchical data — an order with its lines, a route with its stops — expands as an accordion in place instead of a drill-down page. Filters split into two kinds: persistent workflow-state filters and a transient search inside the current scope. Separate sections cover keyboard navigation and feedback for bulk operations.

The skill activates on `components/**`, `src/components/**`, `app/**`, `pages/**` paths and on `*.tsx` and `*.jsx` files, and on prompt words like dispatch, warehouse or scheduling. For status colours it points at a companion skill, `status-colors-and-errors`. On a consumer app these rules work against you — sparse layouts fit there better.

## Requirements
- Works with: Linear

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill operational-expert-tool-ui -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/operational-expert-tool-ui/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/operational-expert-tool-ui/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill operational-expert-tool-ui -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/operational-expert-tool-ui/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill operational-expert-tool-ui -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/operational-expert-tool-ui/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills operational-expert-tool-ui
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/operational-expert-tool-ui/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill operational-expert-tool-ui -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/operational-expert-tool-ui
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/operational-expert-tool-ui/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill operational-expert-tool-ui -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/operational-expert-tool-ui/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design an orders table where each row shows its status without a hover
- keep an order-and-lines hierarchy in an expanding accordion instead of a separate page
- separate persistent workflow filters from a quick search inside the current scope
- add row navigation by keyboard for an operator who never leaves the keys
- report the result of a bulk action that touched dozens of records

## Example prompts
- design a dispatcher screen: an order list with statuses and expandable lines
- this tool is used by warehouse staff all day, make the table dense and compact
- add arrow-key row navigation and space to expand an accordion row

# Operational Expert Tool UI

An operational expert tool is software used by trained domain specialists — warehouse operators, dispatchers, planners, analysts — as their primary work surface, often for the entire working day. These users are not beginners discovering a product; they are professionals executing a defined job with the tool as their instrument.

This is a fundamentally different design context from consumer software or occasional-use SaaS. The design priorities are reversed: density and speed of action take precedence over discoverability and visual spaciousness.

---

## Primary Design Principles

### 1. Information over whitespace

An expert user does not need breathing room to orient themselves — they know the tool. Every pixel of empty space is a missed opportunity to show data they need to act on.
