## What it does

openspec is a reference skill for the OpenSpec (OPSX) system, where planning a change follows an artifact graph instead of fixed linear phases. The agent gets descriptions of `/opsx:explore`, `/opsx:new`, `/opsx:continue`, `/opsx:ff`, `/opsx:apply`, `/opsx:verify`, `/opsx:sync`, `/opsx:archive` and `/opsx:bulk-archive`, plus rules for choosing between updating a change and starting a new one.

Inside are reference files: artifact graph core concepts, OPSX workflow behavior, setup and profiles, schema customization, schema workflow gaps, and the experimental release plan. Schema management through the CLI is covered too — `openspec schemas`, `openspec schema which --all`, `openspec schema init`, `openspec schema fork`, `openspec schema validate`. Per-project settings go in `openspec/config.yaml`, where you set the schema, stack context, and rules for proposals and specs.

Schema precedence runs CLI flag, change metadata, project config, then `spec-driven` as the default. The skill explicitly forbids treating the system as a linear workflow engine or silently falling back between schemas and templates. So if your agent starts marching through phases in order, that is a sign to correct it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add itechmeat/llm-code --skill openspec -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/openspec/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/openspec/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add itechmeat/llm-code --skill openspec -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/openspec/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add itechmeat/llm-code --skill openspec -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/openspec/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install itechmeat/llm-code openspec
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/openspec/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add itechmeat/llm-code --skill openspec -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/itechmeat/llm-code --path skills/openspec
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/openspec/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add itechmeat/llm-code --skill openspec -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/itechmeat/llm-code/tree/HEAD/skills/openspec/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- see which artifacts are ready to create for a change
- decide between updating a change and opening a new one
- trace how a schema and its templates resolve
- write project rules for proposals and specs in the config
- carry a change from planning through to archive

## Example prompts
- show me which artifacts are ready to create for the active change
- explain how the schema resolves for this change
- help me set up `openspec/config.yaml` for our stack

# OpenSpec (OPSX) Skill

Use this skill to guide or reason about the OpenSpec artifact-driven workflow system (OPSX), including artifact graphs, schema/template resolution, change lifecycle, and experimental commands/skills.

## Quick Navigation

- Artifact graph core concepts: references/artifact-core.md
- OPSX workflow behavior and usage: references/opsx-workflow.md
- Setup + profiles (init, update, config profile): references/setup-profiles.md
- Schema customization workflow and gaps: references/schema-customization.md
- End-to-end schema workflow gaps and proposed solution: references/schema-workflow-gaps.md
- Experimental release plan and rollout checklist: references/experimental-release-plan.md

## Release Highlights (1.2.0 → 1.3.0)

- **More tool integrations:** adds support for Junie, Lingma, ForgeCode, and IBM Bob.
- **Safer setup:** shell completion installation is now opt-in, and Copilot auto-detection no longer triggers from a bare `.github/` directory alone.
- **Adapter fixes:** Pi command generation was corrected, and OpenCode now uses the canonical `.opencode/commands/` path.
- **Safer status checks:** `openspec status` now exits cleanly when a project has no changes yet.

## OPSX Commands

| Command              | Purpose                                                  |
| -------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| `/opsx:explore` | Think through ideas, investigate problems (no structure) |
| `/opsx:new`          | Start a new change                                       |
| `/opsx:continue` | Create next artifact based on dependencies |
| `/opsx:ff`           | Fast-forward — create all planning artifacts at once     |
| `/opsx:apply` | Implement tasks, updating artifacts as needed |
| `/opsx:verify`       | Validate implementation matches spec                     |
| `/opsx:sync` | Sync delta specs to main specs |
| `/opsx:archive`      | Archive single completed change                          |
| `/opsx:bulk-archive` | Archive multiple completed changes at once |

**Legacy (non-OPSX) command:** `/openspec:proposal` creates all planning artifacts at once. Prefer OPSX, but this can be useful for small/straightforward changes or older setups.
