## What it does

The skill covers OpenRouter as a single gateway to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and Mistral. The interface matches the OpenAI SDK, so switching over means changing `baseURL` and the key. Install the client first: `npm install openai` or `pip install openai`.

Inside are TypeScript and Python examples: a basic chat call, streaming with error handling and function calls, and chunk parsing via `delta.content`. A separate section walks through model choice by quality, speed or price, with per-1M-token rates. There is selection logic for code, vision and long-context tasks.

You need a key — create one on openrouter.ai and export it as `OPENROUTER_API_KEY`. Billing is per token, no subscriptions. If your code already speaks the OpenAI SDK, the migration is a couple of lines. That is the real reason to reach for this skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill openrouter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/openrouter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/openrouter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill openrouter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/openrouter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill openrouter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/openrouter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills openrouter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/openrouter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill openrouter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/ai/services/openrouter
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/openrouter/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill openrouter -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/ai/services/openrouter/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- reach several LLMs with one key and one SDK
- swap models per task without rewriting code
- stream responses with proper error handling
- compare per-1M-token prices before picking a model
- drop vendor lock-in

## Example prompts
- Show me how to connect OpenRouter with the Anthropic SDK in TypeScript
- Write a streaming call to anthropic/claude-3.5-sonnet with error handling
- Pick a model for code generation with quality as the priority

# OpenRouter - Unified AI API Gateway

## Overview

OpenRouter provides a single API to access 200+ language models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, and more. It offers intelligent routing, streaming, cost optimization, and standardized OpenAI-compatible interface.

**Key Features**:
- Access 200+ models through one API
- OpenAI-compatible interface (drop-in replacement)
- Intelligent model routing and fallbacks
- Real-time streaming responses
- Cost tracking and optimization
- Model performance analytics
- Function calling support
- Vision model support

**Pricing Model**:
- Pay-per-token (no subscriptions)
- Volume discounts available
- Free tier with credits
- Per-model pricing varies

**Installation**:
```bash
npm install openai  # Use OpenAI SDK
# or
pip install openai  # Python
```

## Quick Start

### 1. Get API Key

```bash
# Sign up at https://openrouter.ai/keys
export OPENROUTER_API_KEY="sk-or-v1-..."
```

### 2. Basic Chat Completion

```typescript
import OpenAI from 'openai';
const client = new OpenAI({
  baseURL: 'https://openrouter.ai/api/v1',
  apiKey: process.env.OPENROUTER_API_KEY,
  defaultHeaders: {
    'HTTP-Referer': 'https://your-app.com',  // Optional
    'X-Title': 'Your App Name',              // Optional
  }
});
async function chat() {
  const completion = await client.chat.completions.create({
    model: 'anthropic/claude-3.5-sonnet',
    messages: [
      { role: 'user', content: 'Explain quantum computing in simple terms' }
    ],
  });
  console.log(completion.choices[0].message.content);
}
```

### 3. Streaming Response

```typescript
async function streamChat() {
  const stream = await client.chat.completions.create({
    model: 'openai/gpt-4-turbo',
    messages: [
      { role: 'user', content: 'Write a short story about AI' }
    ],
    stream: true,
  });
  for await (const chunk of stream) {
    const content = chunk.choices[0]?.delta?.content || '';
    process.stdout.write(content);
  }
}
```
