## What it does

The skill hands your agent a reference for OpenCV 4.9.0. It covers reading and writing images and video, resizing and color conversion, edge detection with Canny and Sobel, contour finding, feature detection and matching through SIFT, ORB and AKAZE, object detection with Haar Cascades, HOG and the DNN module for YOLO and SSD, face recognition, segmentation with thresholding, watershed and GrabCut, optical flow, camera calibration and panorama stitching.

What's inside: code patterns and a rules list. The agent will check `img is not None` after `cv2.imread()`, convert BGR to RGB before matplotlib output, and release captures with `cap.release()`. Anti-patterns get their own section — Python pixel loops, a missing `cv2.waitKey()`, mixing PIL and OpenCV.

The color space is where things break. OpenCV works in BGR by default, not RGB, so an image passed straight to matplotlib or PIL comes out with wrong colors. SIFT and SURF also need `opencv-contrib-python` rather than the base `opencv-python` package. On a server with no display, install `opencv-python-headless` — `cv2.imshow` windows won't open otherwise.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tondevrel/scientific-agent-skills --skill opencv -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/opencv/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/opencv/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tondevrel/scientific-agent-skills --skill opencv -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/opencv/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tondevrel/scientific-agent-skills --skill opencv -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/opencv/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tondevrel/scientific-agent-skills opencv
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/opencv/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tondevrel/scientific-agent-skills --skill opencv -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tondevrel/scientific-agent-skills --path skills/opencv
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/opencv/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tondevrel/scientific-agent-skills --skill opencv -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tondevrel/scientific-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/opencv/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- read frames from a camera and process them in a loop
- find object contours in a photo
- match features between two images with SIFT or ORB
- track a moving object through a video stream
- calibrate a camera and stitch a panorama from shots

## Example prompts
- read video from the camera, convert frames to grayscale and show them in a window
- find contours in image.jpg and print how many there are
- match features between two photos with ORB and draw the matches

# OpenCV - Computer Vision and Image Processing

OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library) is the de facto standard library for computer vision tasks. It provides 2500+ optimized algorithms for real-time image and video processing, from basic operations like reading images to advanced tasks like face recognition and 3D reconstruction.

## When to Use

- Reading, writing, and displaying images and videos from files or cameras.
- Image preprocessing (resizing, cropping, rotating, color conversion).
- Edge detection (Canny, Sobel) and contour finding.
- Feature detection and matching (SIFT, ORB, AKAZE).
- Object detection (Haar Cascades, HOG, DNN module for YOLO/SSD).
- Face detection and recognition.
- Image segmentation (thresholding, watershed, GrabCut).
- Video analysis (motion detection, object tracking, optical flow).
- Camera calibration and 3D reconstruction.
- Image stitching and panorama creation.
- Real-time applications requiring fast performance.

## Core Principles

### Image as NumPy Array
OpenCV represents images as NumPy arrays with shape (height, width, channels). This allows seamless integration with NumPy operations and other scientific Python libraries.

### BGR Color Space (Not RGB!)
OpenCV uses BGR (Blue-Green-Red) instead of RGB by default. This is critical to remember when displaying images or integrating with other libraries.

### In-Place vs Copy Operations
Many OpenCV functions modify images in-place for performance. Understanding when copies are made is essential for efficient code.

### C++ Performance in Python
OpenCV is written in optimized C++, making it extremely fast even when called from Python. Avoid Python loops when OpenCV vectorized operations exist.

## Quick Reference

### Installation

```bash
# Basic OpenCV
pip install opencv-python
# With contrib modules (SIFT, SURF, etc.)
pip install opencv-contrib-python
# Headless (no GUI, for servers)
pip install opencv-python-headless
```
