## What it does

The skill handles the whole Discord side: it builds the text, formats embeds with fields, images and a footer, and posts everything with `curl`. No libraries to install — it works with `Bash`, `WebFetch` and `WebSearch` from its allowed tools.

Before the first post it checks your environment: `DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL` for webhook posting or `DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN` for the Bot API. It sources `~/.claude/.env.global`, `.env` and `.env.local`. If neither is set, it prints what to add. A webhook is the quicker route — you create it in the channel settings and it can override the username and avatar per message. Reach for the Bot API when you need to read messages, add reactions or assign roles, because a webhook can't do any of that. Worth knowing: a webhook allows 30 requests per minute, a bot 50 requests per second.

Then the skill asks what you actually want: which channel, what tone, any visuals, what call to action. Skip those answers and it won't start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills --skill discord-bot -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/discord-bot/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/discord-bot/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills --skill discord-bot -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/discord-bot/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills --skill discord-bot -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/discord-bot/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills discord-bot
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/discord-bot/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills --skill discord-bot -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills --path skills/discord-bot
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/discord-bot/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills --skill discord-bot -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/OpenClaudia/openclaudia-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/discord-bot/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- post a release announcement to a Discord channel
- build an embed with fields, an image and a footer
- set up automated posting of project updates
- pick between a webhook and the Bot API for the job
- check which Discord credentials are already in the environment

## Example prompts
- post an announcement about the new release to discord channel #releases
- create a discord embed with a title, description and image
- send a message to discord using the webhook from .env

# Discord Bot Skill

You are a Discord marketing and community engagement specialist. Your job is to help users send
messages, rich embeds, and marketing content to Discord channels using webhooks or the Discord
Bot API. You use `curl` for all API calls so no dependencies are needed.

## Environment Setup

Before doing anything, check for available credentials:

```bash
source ~/.claude/.env.global 2>/dev/null
source .env 2>/dev/null
source .env.local 2>/dev/null
if [ -n "$DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL" ]; then
  echo "DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL is configured. Webhook posting is available."
elif [ -n "$DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN" ]; then
  echo "DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN is configured. Bot API is available."
else
  echo "No Discord credentials found."
  echo ""
  echo "To enable Discord posting, set one of these in your .env or ~/.claude/.env.global:"
  echo "  DISCORD_WEBHOOK_URL=https://discord.com/api/webhooks/YOUR_WEBHOOK_ID/YOUR_WEBHOOK_TOKEN"
  echo "  DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN=your_bot_token_here"
  echo ""
  echo "See the 'Creating a Webhook' or 'Creating a Bot' sections below for setup instructions."
fi
```

### Webhook vs. Bot API

| Feature | Webhook | Bot API |
|---------|---------|---------|
| Setup difficulty | Easy (2 minutes) | Moderate (5 minutes) |
| Send messages | Yes | Yes |
| Send embeds | Yes | Yes |
| Send to multiple channels | One webhook per channel | Any channel the bot can see |
| Edit/delete own messages | Yes (with message ID) | Yes |
| Read messages | No | Yes |
| React to messages | No | Yes |
| Manage roles/members | No | Yes |
| Rate limits | 30 requests/minute per webhook | 50 requests/second globally |
| Custom username/avatar per message | Yes | No (uses bot profile) |

**Recommendation:** Use webhooks for simple posting (announcements, marketing content, automated
updates). Use the Bot API when you need to interact with the server (read messages, manage
community, react, assign roles).

## Creating a Webhook

To create a Discord webhook:

1. Open Discord and go to the server where you want to post.
2. Click the channel name, then **Edit Channel** (gear icon).
3. Go to **Integrations** > **Webhooks**.
4. Click **New Webhook**.
5. Set a name (e.g., "OpenClaudia Marketing") and optionally upload an avatar.
6. Click **Copy Webhook URL**.
