## What it does

The skill walks your codebase, finds route definitions, and pulls out types, request and response bodies, and parameters. It maps routes to OpenAPI path objects, turns types into component schemas, and adds descriptions, examples and tags. Output is YAML or JSON.

Under the hood are TypeScript scripts: a type-to-schema converter built on `typescript`, an Express route scanner using `@babel/parser` and `@babel/traverse` that reads JSDoc comments (`@summary`, `@description`, `@tags`), and a spec generator using `js-yaml`. The base template covers `servers`, `tags`, and `securitySchemes` for `bearerAuth` and `apiKey`. The finished spec imports into Postman or Insomnia, or opens in Swagger UI.

The Express scanner depends on JSDoc, so handlers without comments give you no summary or tags — you will add those to the spec by hand. The type converter handles primitives, arrays, objects and string unions as enums; anything more involved comes out as an empty schema. Worth checking the output before you hand it to a frontend team or a code generator.

## Requirements
- Works with: Postman

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill openapi-generator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/openapi-generator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/openapi-generator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill openapi-generator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/openapi-generator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill openapi-generator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/openapi-generator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills openapi-generator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/openapi-generator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill openapi-generator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path testing/openapi-generator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/openapi-generator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill openapi-generator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- generate an OpenAPI spec from routes already in the codebase
- describe request and response schemas from TypeScript types
- add examples and tags to existing API documentation
- produce a file to import into Postman or Insomnia
- open Express routes in Swagger UI

## Example prompts
- generate an OpenAPI spec from the routes in `src/routes`
- create a swagger spec for my Fastify API in YAML
- add descriptions and tags to the OpenAPI docs from the JSDoc in my code

# OpenAPI Generator

Generate OpenAPI 3.0/3.1 specifications from your API codebase automatically.

## Core Workflow

1. **Scan routes**: Find all API route definitions
2. **Extract schemas**: Types, request/response bodies, params
3. **Build paths**: Convert routes to OpenAPI path objects
4. **Generate schemas**: Create component schemas from types
5. **Add documentation**: Descriptions, examples, tags
6. **Export spec**: YAML or JSON format

## OpenAPI 3.1 Base Template

```yaml
openapi: 3.1.0
info:
  title: API Title
  version: 1.0.0
  description: API description
  contact:
    email: api@example.com
  license:
    name: MIT
    url: https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT
servers:
  - url: http://localhost:3000/api
    description: Development
  - url: https://api.example.com
    description: Production
tags:
  - name: Users
    description: User management endpoints
  - name: Products
    description: Product catalog endpoints
paths: {}
components:
  schemas: {}
  securitySchemes:
    bearerAuth:
      type: http
      scheme: bearer
      bearerFormat: JWT
    apiKey:
      type: apiKey
      in: header
      name: X-API-Key
security:
  - bearerAuth: []
```

## TypeScript to OpenAPI Schema Converter

```typescript
// scripts/type-to-schema.ts
import * as ts from "typescript";
interface OpenAPISchema {
  type?: string;
  properties?: Record<string, OpenAPISchema>;
  required?: string[];
  items?: OpenAPISchema;
  $ref?: string;
  enum?: string[];
  format?: string;
  description?: string;
  example?: unknown;
}
function typeToOpenAPISchema(
  checker: ts.TypeChecker,
  type: ts.Type
): OpenAPISchema {
  // Handle primitives
  if (type.flags & ts.TypeFlags.String) {
    return { type: "string" };
  }
  if (type.flags & ts.TypeFlags.Number) {
    return { type: "number" };
  }
  if (type.flags & ts.TypeFlags.Boolean) {
    return { type: "boolean" };
  }
  // Handle arrays
  if (checker.isArrayType(type)) {
    const elementType = (type as ts.TypeReference).typeArguments?.[0];
    return {
      type: "array",
      items: elementType ? typeToOpenAPISchema(checker, elementType) : {},
    };
  }
  // Handle object types
  if (type.flags & ts.TypeFlags.Object) {
