# open-source-marketing

Plan open-source project promotion through GitHub, community work, and a clearer contributor path. The skill expects an audience context file before it starts.

## What it does

The skill reviews a project's README and GitHub setup, including its description, topics, quick start, documentation, and issue templates. It also covers community spaces and ways to help users move toward contributing, such as `good first issue` labels and a `CONTRIBUTING.md` guide.

Read `.agents/developer-audience-context.md` first. It should describe the project's users, where they find tools, the alternatives they consider, and how they assess open-source projects. If the file is missing, run the `developer-audience-context` skill first. Without that context, promotion advice won't be grounded in the project's audience.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill open-source-marketing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/open-source-marketing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/open-source-marketing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill open-source-marketing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/open-source-marketing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill open-source-marketing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/open-source-marketing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jonathimer/devmarketing-skills open-source-marketing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/open-source-marketing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill open-source-marketing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --path skills/open-source-marketing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/open-source-marketing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill open-source-marketing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/open-source-marketing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- revise a project's README and GitHub repository setup
- draft templates for bug reports and feature requests
- map steps from trying a project to making regular contributions
- prepare `CONTRIBUTING.md` guidance for new contributors

## Example prompts
- Review my open-source project's README and GitHub setup using `.agents/developer-audience-context.md`.
- Help me plan community spaces and a path for users to become contributors.
- Draft a `CONTRIBUTING.md` guide for someone making their first contribution.

# Open Source Marketing

This skill helps you market open source projects without being cringe. Covers GitHub optimization, community building, contributor experience, launch strategies, and sustainable growth.

---

## Before You Start

**Load your audience context first.** Read `.agents/developer-audience-context.md` to understand:

- Who would use this project (role, tech stack, problem)
- Where they discover tools (communities, social, search)
- What alternatives exist (why would they switch?)
- How they evaluate OSS (stars, activity, docs, community)

If the context file doesn't exist, run the `developer-audience-context` skill first.

---

## The OSS Marketing Mindset

### What Works vs. What Doesn't

| Works | Doesn't Work |
|-------|--------------|
| Building in public | Spamming "check out my project" |
| Solving real problems | Building solutions seeking problems |
| Genuine community engagement | Transactional follows/unfollows |
| Great docs and DX | "The code is self-documenting" |
| Celebrating contributors | Taking sole credit |
| Consistent presence | Launch and disappear |

### The Growth Equation

```
Growth = (Real value) × (Discoverability) × (First-use experience)
```

If any factor is zero, growth is zero.

---

## GitHub Optimization

### README Excellence

Your README is your landing page. Optimize it.

**Structure:**

```markdown
# Project Name
[One-line description that explains what it does]
[Badges: build status, version, license, downloads]
[Screenshot or GIF showing it in action]
## Why [Project Name]?
- ✅ [Benefit 1 - specific, not fluffy]
- ✅ [Benefit 2]
- ✅ [Benefit 3]
## Quick Start
\`\`\`bash
npm install project-name
\`\`\`
\`\`\`javascript
// 5 lines that show immediate value
\`\`\`
## Installation
