# open-knowledge-write-skill

A skill that walks the agent through authoring a new SKILL.md: picking scope, writing frontmatter, and checking that it triggers when it should.

## What it does

The skill runs the agent through authoring stages. It starts by pinning down the recurring task the new skill should cover, then checks whether one already exists: it lists managed skills, reads likely matches, and searches the public marketplace. If something fits, the agent recommends reuse or import instead of shipping a near-duplicate whose overlapping triggers mis-fire.

Next comes scope. A global skill lives in your home skill roots and fans out to every project; a project skill sits in the repo and reaches teammates on `git pull`. There is a third case. If the repo you are working in is itself a plugin or a skills-distribution repo, the skill is a product of that repo — write it in the repo's own layout beside its siblings and do not call `install`, or it lands somewhere nobody loads.

Keep the body under ~500 lines and push depth into `references/<topic>.md`. The workflow leans on the `write`, `edit` and `install` MCP verbs: authoring and validation are plain file operations, while live preview and eval want a running server (`ok start`, or `ok-beta start` for Beta).

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill open-knowledge-write-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/open-knowledge-write-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/open-knowledge-write-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill open-knowledge-write-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/open-knowledge-write-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill open-knowledge-write-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/open-knowledge-write-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install inkeep/open-knowledge-skills open-knowledge-write-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/open-knowledge-write-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill open-knowledge-write-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --path skills/core/open-knowledge-write-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/open-knowledge-write-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill open-knowledge-write-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- turn a recurring workflow into an installable skill
- write a description that triggers at the right moment
- decide between global and project scope
- check whether an installed skill already covers the task
- get the SKILL.md frontmatter and structure right

## Example prompts
- help me write a skill that checks migrations before commit
- turn this workflow into a skill — here is one example task
- improve the triggering in my SKILL.md, it fires too rarely

Also use when capturing reusable agent guidance that should live as an installable skill rather than a one-off prompt. Covers choosing scope (project vs global), authoring inside a plugin or skills-distribution repo (write in the repo's own layout, never install), the SKILL.md frontmatter contract, progressive-disclosure structure, evaluating the skill, and installing it into the user's editors."

# Writing an OpenKnowledge skill

You are helping the user author an **Agent Skill** — a `SKILL.md` file (plus
optional `references/` and `scripts/`) that teaches an AI agent how to do a
recurring task. In OpenKnowledge a skill is a first-class, versioned,
installable artifact: you author it with the `write` / `edit` skill verbs, then
`install` it into the user's editors.

Skills earn their keep by being **recognized at the right moment** and **followed
faithfully**. Most of the craft is in two places: a `description` that triggers
reliably, and a body short and concrete enough that the agent actually does what
it says. Work the stages below in order, but jump to where the user already is.

## Stage 1 — Capture intent and classify the skill

**Gate — does this already exist? Check BEFORE you build.** First list managed
skills with `skills({})`, then read any likely match with `skills({ name })`;
these are the Project/Global skills OpenKnowledge already manages. Also search
the public marketplace with `skills({ query: "<2-4 trigger words>" })` before
drafting when the task sounds reusable beyond this project. Each marketplace row
returns `name`, `source`, and `description`; inspect the strongest descriptions,
then import a chosen candidate with `import({ source, skill: name, add: [...] })` and adapt
```
