# online-evals

Attaches judges to config variations so model responses get scored from 0.0 to 1.0 automatically. Useful when you need to watch prompt quality in production.

## What it does

The skill works with LaunchDarkly configs running in judge mode. A judge is its own config that takes another model's response and returns a score plus reasoning. Three judges ship built in: Accuracy, Relevance and Toxicity. You can create a custom judge with a prompt for your own domain, say a security auditor that checks for SQL injection and hardcoded secrets.

Judges attach to a variation through a PATCH request that names the judge key and a sampling rate. The `judges` array replaces every existing attachment, so an empty array strips them all. Worth remembering when you add a judge to a variation that already has one. Each judge config also needs its fallthrough pointed at the enabled variation — configs start on the disabled variation, and without that step nothing gets scored.

You need LaunchDarkly access with AgentControl enabled and a token that can write. Automatic metric recording and the consolidated `track_judge_result` / `trackJudgeResult` call require Python AI SDK v0.20.0+ or Node.js AI SDK v0.20.0+. The skill prefers the LaunchDarkly MCP server, which authenticates over OAuth and skips the token entirely. Direct REST calls are left for steps with no MCP equivalent.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill online-evals -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/online-evals/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/online-evals/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill online-evals -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/online-evals/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill online-evals -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/online-evals/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install launchdarkly/ai-tooling online-evals
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/online-evals/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill online-evals -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/launchdarkly/ai-tooling --path skills/agentcontrol/online-evals
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/online-evals/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill online-evals -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/launchdarkly/ai-tooling/tree/HEAD/skills/agentcontrol/online-evals/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- score model responses in production without reading them by hand
- build a custom judge for code security checks
- compare prompt variations by their quality metrics
- cut toxic output using an inverted metric
- sample only part of the traffic instead of every request

## Example prompts
- Create a security-judge config with a prompt that checks for SQL injection and XSS
- Attach the accuracy judge to the default variation with a sampling rate of 0.5
- Set the judge fallthrough to the enabled variation in the production environment

# Config Online Evaluations

Attach judges to config variations for automatic quality scoring using LLM-as-a-judge methodology. Judges evaluate responses and return scores between 0.0 and 1.0.

## Prerequisites

- LaunchDarkly account with AgentControl enabled
- API access token with write permissions
- Existing config with variations (use `configs-create` skill)
- For automatic metric recording and the consolidated judge-result API: Python AI SDK v0.20.0+ or Node.js AI SDK v0.20.0+

## API Access

Prefer the LaunchDarkly MCP server tools: they authenticate via OAuth and need no token. If a step has no MCP equivalent and you must call the REST API directly, ask the user to paste an API access token for this session and substitute it for `{api_token}` in the examples below. Do not search environment variables, `.env` files, or agent/MCP config files for credentials.

## Core Concepts

### What Are Judges?

Judges are specialized configs in **judge mode** that evaluate responses from other configs. They use an LLM to score outputs and return structured results:

```json
{
  "score": 0.85,
  "reasoning": "Answered correctly with one minor omission"
}
```

### Built-in Judges

LaunchDarkly provides three pre-configured judges:

| Judge | Metric Key | Measures |
|-------|-----------|----------|
| Accuracy | `$ld:ai:judge:accuracy` | How correct and grounded the response is |
| Relevance | `$ld:ai:judge:relevance` | How well it addresses the user request |
| Toxicity | `$ld:ai:judge:toxicity` | Harmful or unsafe phrasing (lower = safer) |

### Completion Mode Only

Judges can only be attached to **completion mode** configs in the UI. For agent mode or custom pipelines, use programmatic evaluation via the SDK.

### Restrictions

- Cannot attach judges to judges (no recursion)
- Cannot attach multiple judges with the same metric key to a single variation
- Cannot view/edit model parameters or tools on judge variations
