## What it does

The skill covers wiring an alert source into Grafana IRM or OnCall: Alertmanager, Grafana Alerting, generic webhook and PagerDuty integrations, Jinja2 routing and grouping templates, and escalation chains built from wait, notify schedule, notify team, webhook and auto-resolve steps. Schedules get their own section — web UI, iCal and Terraform `grafana_oncall_schedule` — plus Slack chatops with Acknowledge, Resolve and Silence, and the P1–P4 incident stages.

Each workflow comes with a verification step. For routing, it tells you to preview the template against a real test payload first and confirm the condition returns True and picks the chain you expect. For a schedule, create it with `POST /api/v1/schedules/` and then check `next_shifts` to see who is on call right now. Separate reference files hold the template helpers and the integration blocks.

You need a Grafana Cloud stack with IRM or OnCall enabled, an API token, and Slack admin rights to install the OnCall app if you want ChatOps. One thing to know up front: OnCall OSS is in maintenance mode and was archived in March 2026, so Grafana Cloud users should go straight to IRM. The concepts carry over, but only IRM is moving forward.

## Requirements
- Works with: Grafana, Terraform, Slack

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill oncall-irm -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/oncall-irm/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/oncall-irm/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill oncall-irm -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/oncall-irm/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill oncall-irm -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/oncall-irm/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install grafana/skills oncall-irm
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/oncall-irm/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill oncall-irm -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/grafana/skills --path skills/grafana-cloud/oncall-irm
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/oncall-irm/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill oncall-irm -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/grafana/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/grafana-cloud/oncall-irm/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- wire Alertmanager to OnCall and confirm alerts arrive
- decide which team gets paged on a critical alert
- build an on-call rotation from a Google Calendar or iCal feed
- set up an escalation chain with waits and team notification
- auto-resolve an alert once it clears

## Example prompts
- Set up the Alertmanager integration with Grafana OnCall and show me how to verify routing
- Build an escalation chain: notify the primary, wait 5 min, then notify the Platform team
- Create the Platform On-Call schedule from iCal and check who is on call right now

description: Route alerts, run on-call rotations, and drive incidents in Grafana IRM / OnCall — integrations (Alertmanager / Grafana Alerting / generic webhook / PagerDuty), Jinja2 routing + grouping templates, escalation chains (wait → notify schedule → notify team → webhook → auto-resolve), schedules (web + iCal + Terraform `grafana_oncall_schedule`), Slack chatops with Acknowledge/Resolve/Silence, and the P1-P4 incident lifecycle. Use when wiring Alertmanager to OnCall, deciding which team gets paged, building rotations from a Google Calendar / iCal, hooking up Slack notifications, or declaring an incident from an alert — even when the user says "page the platform team on critical alerts", "send Prometheus alerts to Slack", "set up our on-call rota", "escalation policy", or "auto-resolve when the alert clears" without naming OnCall / IRM. Heads up — OnCall OSS is in maintenance mode (archived March 2026); Grafana Cloud users should use IRM.

> **IRM docs**: https://grafana.com/docs/grafana-cloud/alerting-and-irm/

> Grafana OnCall OSS is in maintenance mode (archived March 2026). Cloud users → **IRM**. Concepts (chains, schedules, integrations) are identical.

## Prerequisites

- Grafana Cloud stack with IRM/OnCall enabled
- API token (`Authorization: <token>`)
- Slack workspace + admin to install the OnCall app (for ChatOps)

## Core concepts

| Concept | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Integration** | Webhook URL accepting alerts; one per source |
| **Route** | Jinja2 condition that maps to an escalation chain (first True wins) |
| **Escalation Chain** | Wait / notify schedule / notify team / webhook / auto-resolve steps |
| **Schedule** | Calendar-based rotation (web / iCal / Terraform) |
| **Alert Group** | Related alerts collapsed by a Grouping ID template |
| **Notification Policy** | Per-user channels — Slack, mobile push, SMS, phone, email |

Flow: alert → integration → routing template → escalation chain → notifications → ack / resolve.

## Common Workflows

### 1. Wire Alertmanager → IRM and verify routing

```yaml
# 1. In IRM: New integration → Alertmanager. Copy the webhook URL.
# 2. alertmanager.yml (see references/integrations.md for full block):
receivers:
  - name: grafana-oncall
    webhook_configs:
      - url: https://<stack>.grafana.net/integrations/v1/alertmanager/<id>/
        send_resolved: true
