# onboarding-ux

This skill walks your app as a first-time user, finds where they get stuck, and writes the copy plus code for empty states, hints and welcome screens.

## What it does

It runs in two phases. First it browses the app and checks each page the way someone who just logged in would: what a table shows with zero rows, whether the purpose of the app is clear within ten seconds, where filters and keyboard shortcuts hide, whether field labels explain what an irreversible action will do. The report lands in `.jez/artifacts/onboarding/audit.md` with empty states found, missing guidance, feature discovery issues and a short list of quick wins.

Then it generates. The skill reads your codebase to match the existing stack and component patterns: an empty state component with icon, title, description and action button; a dismissable welcome banner for an app with 3–5 features, or a getting-started checklist for a bigger one. Copy is written per page, not from a template.

Browsing needs a browser tool — Chrome MCP, Playwright MCP or `playwright-cli`. Without one the audit never starts. The skill is marked `claude-code-only`, so installing it into Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI will work while the run itself may not — worth testing before you build it into a workflow. It pairs with `ux-audit`, but neither depends on the other: that one finds problems, this one builds the fixes.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill onboarding-ux -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/onboarding-ux/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/onboarding-ux/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill onboarding-ux -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/onboarding-ux/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill onboarding-ux -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/onboarding-ux/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jezweb/claude-skills onboarding-ux
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/onboarding-ux/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill onboarding-ux -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills --path plugins/dev-tools/skills/onboarding-ux
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/onboarding-ux/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill onboarding-ux -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dev-tools/skills/onboarding-ux/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find pages where a new user hits an empty table
- write copy and code for an empty state with a call to action
- build a welcome screen or first-run checklist
- check whether filters, shortcuts and settings are discoverable
- explain the consequences of irreversible actions in the UI

## Example prompts
- walk through the app as a new user and show me where I'd get stuck
- add empty states to my list pages and write the copy for each
- create a getting-started checklist for the dashboard

# Onboarding UX

Audit a web app for onboarding gaps, then generate the in-app guidance to fix them. The goal: a new user should never stare at a blank screen wondering what to do.

## The Problem This Solves

You've built the features. They work. But when a new user logs in for the first time, they see:
- Empty tables with column headers and nothing else
- Sidebars full of labels that mean nothing to them yet
- No indication of where to start or what the app is for
- Features they don't know exist because nothing points to them

This skill finds those gaps and produces the content and code to fill them.

## Browser Tool Detection

Same as ux-audit — detect Chrome MCP, Playwright MCP, or playwright-cli. See ux-audit's browser-tools.md reference if needed.

## URL Resolution

Same as ux-audit — prefer deployed/live URL over localhost. Check wrangler.jsonc, CLAUDE.md, or running dev server.

## Workflow

### Phase 1: Audit — Find the Gaps

Browse the app as a brand new user. On every page, evaluate:

#### Empty States
Navigate to every list/table/collection page. For each:

| Check | Good | Bad |
|-------|------|-----|
| What does a zero-data page show? | "No clients yet. Add your first client to get started." + CTA button | Empty table with column headers, or blank white space |
| Is there a clear action? | Button: "Add your first [thing]" | Nothing — user has to find the action in the nav or a menu |
| Does it explain the feature? | "Clients are the people and businesses you work with. Add one to start tracking your relationships." | Just an empty container |
| Is the empty state designed? | Illustration or icon, helpful copy, prominent CTA | Identical to the populated state minus the data |

#### First Impression
Log in as a new user (or clear state to simulate). Evaluate:

| Check | What to look for |
|-------|-----------------|
```
