## What it does

This skill sits between a brief and intake. `om-discover` leaves `product-brief.md`, `om-spec-writing` leaves a spec with a Phasing section, and `om-backlog` turns either into a tree of tracker issues that `om-auto-fix-issue` can then pick up one by one. Epics come from the Scope *Now* items or the spec's phases, stories from the user-facing outcomes inside them, and tasks appear only where a story needs decomposition.

Every issue is filed through `om-prepare-issue` with `--title`, `--no-spec` and `--skip-dedupe`, so labels, the rationale comment and the body template come from there. The skill itself owns the tree ids, the single dedupe pass, the acceptance criteria and the epic checklists. Before anything is written it searches the tracker with two or three phrasings and by id, then reads credible hits. An issue that already covers the item is adopted into the tree with its number kept, not duplicated.

There is a hard gate. A brief whose problems and target group rest only on `[SYNTHETIC]` or `[ASSUMPTION]` gets refused: instead of a backlog the skill offers the research variant, tasks from the collection plan. When `SDLC.md` carries no Definition of Ready, the readiness check is skipped and the tree header says so. A `--dry-run` needs no tracker and writes nothing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add open-mercato/skills --skill om-backlog -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/om-backlog/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/om-backlog/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add open-mercato/skills --skill om-backlog -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/om-backlog/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add open-mercato/skills --skill om-backlog -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/om-backlog/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install open-mercato/skills om-backlog
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/om-backlog/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add open-mercato/skills --skill om-backlog -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/open-mercato/skills --path skills/om-backlog
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/om-backlog/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add open-mercato/skills --skill om-backlog -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/open-mercato/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/om-backlog/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split Scope *Now* items into epics and stories
- write acceptance criteria as Given / When / Then
- check a brief against the Definition of Ready
- adopt existing tracker issues instead of filing duplicates
- build a research backlog when the problem lacks evidence

## Example prompts
- build the backlog from `product-brief.md`
- turn the spec into issues and show me the tree first
- run `om-backlog docs/spec.md --dry-run` and show the result

# Backlog (epics, stories, tasks from a brief or a spec)

The step between a product brief and Intake. `om-discover` leaves `product-brief.md`; `om-spec-writing` leaves a spec with Phasing; this skill turns either into a tree of tracker issues that `om-auto-fix-issue` can pick up one by one: epics for the Scope's *Now* items or the spec's Phases, stories for the user-facing outcomes inside them with acceptance criteria, tasks only where a story needs decomposition. Every issue is filed through `om-prepare-issue` with `--title`, `--no-spec`, and `--skip-dedupe`, so the labels, the rationale comment, and the body template are its, while this skill owns the tree ids, the one dedupe pass, the acceptance criteria, and the epic checklists.

<HARD-GATE>
Never file a backlog from assumptions. The brief's Problems, Target group, and Goals must rest on real evidence tiers per the Definition of Ready in `SDLC.md`; when they do not, the only backlog this skill files is the research one — the collection plan's interviews and data requests as tasks. Never write to the tracker before the user has seen the whole tree and said yes. Never duplicate an issue that exists: adopt it into the tree.
</HARD-GATE>

## Arguments

- `{source}` (required) — a repo-relative path to `product-brief.md` or to a spec with a `## 📋 Phasing` / `## 📋 Implementation Plan` section.
- `--epic <id>` (optional) — file only this epic (`E02`) and its children.
- `--prefix <letters>` (optional) — the id prefix in titles. Default `E` (`E01`, `E01-S02`, `E01-S02-T01`).
- `--assignee <login>` (optional) — passed through to `om-prepare-issue` for every issue.
- `--dry-run` (optional) — draft and show the tree, write nothing; runs without a tracker (no setup, no dedupe) and never triggers `om-setup-agent-pipeline`.

## Workflow

**ALWAYS check first:** Apply `.ai/skills/om-backlog/SKILL.md` when present; safety rules still win.
