## What it does

The skill directs your coding agent to organize Markdown files inside an Obsidian vault according to a modified PARA layout. It sets up designated folders for projects, areas, archives, fleeting captures, and permanent Zettelkasten entries. Files receive structured YAML frontmatter with creation dates, aliases, and tags, alongside Obsidian wikilinks and standard callout blocks.

It includes query patterns for Dataview and templating guidelines for Templater. Operating from a terminal has caveats: running Templater scripts via CLI lacks a graphical interface, causing interactive prompts like `tp.system.*` to return `nil`. In addition, batch edits made externally bypass Obsidian link indexers until you reopen the vault or trigger a reindex.

## Requirements
- Works with: Obsidian

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills --skill obsidian-vault-management -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/obsidian-vault-management/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/obsidian-vault-management/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills --skill obsidian-vault-management -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/obsidian-vault-management/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills --skill obsidian-vault-management -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/obsidian-vault-management/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills obsidian-vault-management
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/obsidian-vault-management/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills --skill obsidian-vault-management -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills --path skills/obsidian-vault-management
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/obsidian-vault-management/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills --skill obsidian-vault-management -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/julianobarbosa/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/obsidian-vault-management/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- organize vault markdown files into PARA directories
- generate daily notes formatted with dates and navigation links
- build Dataview queries to track active project statuses
- format Zettelkasten cards with frontmatter and bidirectional links

## Example prompts
- Create today's daily note with navigation links and task placeholders
- Write a Dataview table query listing open items from `01 - Projects`
- Add an evergreen note to `04 - Permanent` with proper metadata

# Obsidian Vault Management

## Vault Structure (PARA-Based)

This vault uses a PARA-like organization:

| Folder | Purpose |
|--------|---------|
| `00 - Maps of Content` | Index notes linking related topics |
| `01 - Projects` | Active project notes |
| `02 - Areas` | Ongoing responsibilities |
| `03 - Resources` | Reference materials |
| `04 - Permanent` | Evergreen/zettelkasten notes |
| `05 - Fleeting` | Quick capture notes |
| `06 - Daily` | Daily notes (YYYY/MM/YYYYMMDD.md) |
| `07 - Archives` | Completed/inactive content |
| `08 - books` | Book notes and clippings |
| `99 - Meta` | Templates, settings |
| `Clippings` | Web clips and imports |

## Quick Reference

### Linking Syntax

```markdown
Note Name                    # Basic wikilink
Display Text       # Aliased link
Note Name#^block-id          # Link to block
!Note Name                   # Embed note
!image.png                   # Embed image
!Note Name#Heading           # Embed section
```

### Frontmatter Template

```yaml
---
created:
```

## Creating Notes

### Daily Note

Create in `06 - Daily/YYYY/MM/` with filename `YYYYMMDD.md`:

```yaml
---
created: 2025-12-09T09:00
updated: 2025-12-09T09:00
title: "20251209"
type: daily-note
status: true
tags:
  - daily
  - journal
  - 2025
  - 2025-12
aliases:
  - "2025-12-09"
date_formatted: 2025-12-09
topics:
  - "daily"
  - "journal"
related:
  - "2025-12-08"
  - "2025-12-10"
cssclasses:
  - daily
---
# Daily Note - 2025-12-09
### Tasks
- [ ] Task 1
### Journal
...
### Navigation
<< 2025-12-08 | **Today** | 2025-12-10 >>
```

### Zettelkasten Note

Create in `04 - Permanent/`:

```yaml
---
created: date
type: zettelkasten
tags:
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 34322ebe4bb0479e

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 34322ebe4bb0479e tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
