## What it does

This skill onboards an application into Elastic Observability using the Elastic Distribution of OpenTelemetry. It reads the dependency manifest (`pom.xml`, `requirements.txt`, `pyproject.toml`, `*.csproj`, `composer.json`) to pick the right language reference, then looks for a classic Elastic APM agent. Markers like `ELASTIC_APM_*` variables or a language-specific APM package send it down the migration path instead of layering EDOT on top.

Attachment differs by runtime. Java uses the `-javaagent:` flag or `JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS`; Python wraps the entrypoint with `opentelemetry-instrument`; .NET calls `builder.AddElasticOpenTelemetry()` at startup; PHP installs a native extension from an OS package and needs a full process restart. One step sets `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT` to the Elastic managed OTLP endpoint or an EDOT Collector. An APM Server URL is the wrong answer here.

You need the `elastic` CLI version 0.2 or later with an Elasticsearch context, plus an OTLP destination the application can reach. ES|QL verification wants Elasticsearch 8.11 or later. The skill finishes by querying the cluster: no rows means the service is not reporting, so treat that as a cause to find rather than a config that worked.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill observability-onboarding -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/onboarding/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills onboarding
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/observability/onboarding
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/observability/onboarding/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick the EDOT attach method for a service's language and runtime
- detect a classic Elastic APM agent and migrate off it without stacking EDOT on top
- set the correct OTLP destination and reject APM Server URLs
- confirm through ES|QL that traces, metrics and logs land under the expected `service.name`
- diagnose an instrumented service that never shows up in Elastic

## Example prompts
- Instrument this service with EDOT and verify the telemetry arrives
- Find the classic Elastic APM agent in this project and move the service to EDOT
- The service is missing in Elastic — check with ES|QL whether traces, metrics and logs arrive

# Observability Onboarding

Instrument an application with the Elastic Distribution of OpenTelemetry (EDOT) and prove the telemetry arrived. The
instrumentation change is only half the job: an application can be configured perfectly and still emit nothing, so this
skill ends by querying Elasticsearch for the service's data rather than declaring success from a config diff.

The scope is application instrumentation with the EDOT SDKs. Deploying an EDOT Collector, collecting logs from files or
infrastructure, and onboarding data through Elastic Agent, Fleet, or integration packages are separate ingest paths that
this skill does not cover.

Once telemetry is flowing, use the **observability-sre-triage** skill to assess service health,
**observability-k8s-investigation** for Kubernetes-layer failures, **observability-service-reliability** to define SLOs
and alerts on the new signals, and **observability-llm-obs** for GenAI and agentic workloads.

## Environment Configuration

This skill executes Elasticsearch operations through the `elastic` CLI. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for. Do
not guess credentials, call the HTTP API directly, or attempt other workarounds.
