# observability-driven-testing

Turns production traces, logs and errors into new tests. Useful when coverage grows by guesswork and the same failures keep coming back.

## What it does

The skill closes the loop between observability and test creation. An error log, a slow trace, a latency spike — each one points at a place where tests are missing. Four principles run through it: production data sets test priorities, traces count as evidence, observability gaps equal test gaps, and the cycle from error to analysis to test to deploy has to close.

The bulk of it covers traces as test evidence. A test can emit its own spans and correlate them with application traces through `service.name`, `test.suite` and `test.run_id`. For in-process checks the author suggests an `InMemorySpanExporter` with `SimpleSpanProcessor` and reading `getFinishedSpans()` synchronously — no network, no timeout flake. The real collector plus trace waiting is reserved for cross-process traces.

Version pinning is the sharp edge here. Trace assertions reference attribute names as strings, and those names drift between releases, so assertions break without a sound. The author advises pinning `@opentelemetry/semantic-conventions` to an exact version with no caret and bumping it deliberately. New OpenTracing shims are out: the compatibility layer is deprecated.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill observability-driven-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/observability-driven-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/observability-driven-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill observability-driven-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/observability-driven-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill observability-driven-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/observability-driven-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills observability-driven-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/observability-driven-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill observability-driven-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/observability-driven-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/observability-driven-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill observability-driven-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- turn a Sentry or Datadog error into a concrete test
- verify a request hit the cache and skipped the database
- find which endpoints need tests next
- correlate test runs with application traces
- debug a flaky trace assertion or a span that never arrives

## Example prompts
- write tests from the production errors we saw this week
- add a trace assertion: the request must not touch the database
- which endpoints should we cover first based on trace data

<objective>
Production is the richest source of test design input: every error log, slow trace, and latency spike tells you where tests are missing. This skill closes the feedback loop between production observability and test creation, and makes trace structure a test assertion. A `200 OK` that silently hit the database on a path meant to be cache-only passes an HTTP assertion — a trace assertion catches it. Output: instrumented test runners, trace-based assertions, and a production-error-to-test pipeline.
</objective>

## Quick Route

| Situation | Go to |
|-----------|-------|
| Make test execution emit traces correlated with the app | OTel test-runner setup (`references/trace-assertions.md`) |
| Assert which services were called / no error spans / latency | Traces as Test Evidence |
| Turn a Sentry/Datadog error into a test | Production Error to Test Pipeline |
| Decide which endpoints need tests next | Telemetry-Driven Test Prioritization |
| A trace assertion is flaky or a span never arrives | Failure Modes |

## Discovery Questions

Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first. If it exists, use it as context and skip questions already answered there.

**Observability stack:**
- What APM/tracing tool is in place? (Datadog, New Relic, Honeycomb, Splunk Observability/SignalFx, ServiceNow Cloud Observability — formerly Lightstep, Dash0, Jaeger, Grafana Tempo, OpenTelemetry-native) — determines how you pull traces and which query syntax the diagnosis workflow uses.
