## What it does

The ProMicro nRF52840 (V1940) ships under names like SuperMini nRF52840 and nRF52840 Pro Micro, and neither `platform-nordicnrf52` nor the Adafruit core knows it. This skill fills the gap with a vendored board definition, a `variant.h` carrying the Pro Micro pin map, and a `platformio.ini` that works. Reach for `board = adafruit_feather_nrf52840` instead and the build succeeds, the flash succeeds, and every pin number is wrong.

Three pieces make up the package: a hardware reference with the full pin table, power and bootloader notes, a peripheral walkthrough and a symptom-to-fix chart; a recipe file with code you can paste for USB CDC over TinyUSB, `Wire`, `SPI`, SAADC, BLE UART, deep sleep and UF2 conversion; and a template project that compiles as-is in three variants, plus a scaffold script. Zephyr users get the `promicro_nrf52840/nrf52840/uf2` target.

Watch the 32.768 kHz crystal. Plenty of clones leave it off the board, and `USE_LFXO` then parks the SoftDevice waiting for a clock that never arrives: USB enumerates, the LED stays dark, `Serial` never opens. Keep `USE_LFRC` in `variant.h` until you have confirmed the part is there. Also include `<Adafruit_TinyUSB.h>` before touching `Serial`, or the link dies on `undefined reference to 'Serial'`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill nrf52840-promicro -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nrf52840-promicro/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nrf52840-promicro/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill nrf52840-promicro -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nrf52840-promicro/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill nrf52840-promicro -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nrf52840-promicro/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alexex1993/mcu-skills nrf52840-promicro
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nrf52840-promicro/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill nrf52840-promicro -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills --path skills/nrf/nrf52840-promicro
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nrf52840-promicro/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill nrf52840-promicro -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/nrf/nrf52840-promicro/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build firmware for a nice!nano v2 clone missing from PlatformIO
- wire up the Pro Micro pin map instead of the Feather one
- fix a board that enumerates over USB but never blinks
- flash through a double RESET tap and UF2
- match the SoftDevice version in the board JSON

## Example prompts
- Scaffold a ProMicro nRF52840 project from the skill template and make the LED on P0.15 blink
- The board shows up as a USB device but my code never runs — check `USE_LFRC` in `variant.h`
- Set up SAADC on P0.04 and convert the reading to volts

description: Firmware development for the ProMicro nRF52840 (V1940) — the nice!nano v2 compatible clone also sold as SuperMini nRF52840, nRF52840 Pro Micro or nRFMicro (nRF52840 QIAA, Cortex-M4F @ 64 MHz, 1 MB flash / 256 KB RAM, BLE 5 + 802.15.4, native USB, Adafruit UF2 bootloader with SoftDevice S140). Covers the PlatformIO + Adafruit nRF52 Arduino setup for a board that ships in neither, the vendored board definition and Pro Micro pin map, USB CDC via TinyUSB, Bluefruit BLE, the 32.768 kHz crystal that clones omit, SAADC pins, NFC pins as GPIO, and Zephyr's promicro_nrf52840 board target. Use when working on this board or any nice!nano v2 / ZMK keyboard controller: project setup, platformio.ini, pin mapping, LED not blinking, double-tap RESET and UF2/DFU flashing, SoftDevice version mismatches, a board that enumerates but never runs, or debugging why something on the board does not work.

# ProMicro nRF52840 (V1940)

A nice!nano v2 clone: nRF52840 module on a Pro Micro footprint, USB-C, factory
Adafruit UF2 bootloader with SoftDevice S140 6.1.1. Sold as *ProMicro
nRF52840*, *SuperMini nRF52840*, *nRF52840 Pro Micro*; the ZMK/QMK wireless
keyboard crowd is where most of the documentation lives.

Its failure modes are quiet and all look like "the board is dead": the board
is in neither PlatformIO's board list nor the Arduino core's variant list, so
half of what a tutorial tells you to type does not apply; a missing 32.768 kHz
crystal hangs the SoftDevice with USB still enumerated; and `Serial` does not
exist until you include a library that the code never otherwise mentions.

- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the complete board reference: full pin map
  (silkscreen → Arduino number → P0.xx/P1.xx → peripheral), power, flash and
  RAM maps, bootloader layout, clocks, **plus** a development guide (Part II:
  §7 toolchain, §8 peripheral cookbook, §9 flashing and recovery, §10 the
  Zephyr board target, §11 symptom → cause → fix table).
- `reference/recipes.md` — copy-paste code: `platformio.ini`, the board JSON,
  `variant.h`/`variant.cpp` excerpts, USB CDC + `Serial1`, SAADC with the
  gain math, `Wire`/`SPI`, BLE UART, InternalFS, deep sleep, UF2 conversion.
- `template/` — a **project that builds clean**, in three variants, plus a
  scaffold script. See `template/README.md`.
