## What it does

This skill transforms raw meeting notes, task lists, or process descriptions into functioning Notion trackers. It deduces property types and layout views directly from your text, so you do not have to write schemas by hand. Narrative details stay inside page bodies, while reusable values become typed properties for sorting and grouping.

Before creating new tables, the agent inspects existing workspace databases to prevent duplicates. It links related entities with Notion relations instead of copying identical records. The tool creates relation targets first, then applies views. If asked to migrate information from notes, it converts items into rows while leaving original records untouched.

Filtered views organize work queues, but they do not secure private data. They are not permissions boundaries. If write access to the workspace is missing, the skill outputs a structured design plan and outlines steps to assemble the database manually.

## Requirements
- Works with: Notion

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill database-designer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/database-designer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/database-designer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill database-designer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/database-designer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill database-designer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/database-designer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install makenotion/notion-cookbook database-designer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/database-designer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill database-designer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/makenotion/notion-cookbook --path skills/mcp-clients/database-designer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/database-designer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add makenotion/notion-cookbook --skill database-designer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/makenotion/notion-cookbook/tree/HEAD/skills/mcp-clients/database-designer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Structure messy notes into tracked Notion databases
- Connect related tables through relations instead of duplicate entries
- Generate focused views for task queues, deadlines, and ownership
- Convert itemized notes into table rows while keeping source text safe

## Example prompts
- Turn these launch notes into a Notion tracker with assignees and statuses
- Convert this list of content ideas into a schedule showing upcoming publication dates
- Restructure our project database so we can spot blocked tickets without losing context

# Database designer

Help people see what needs attention, who is handling it, and what happens next.
Turn existing notes or a described workflow into a simple Notion tracker, reusing
what already works and preserving the information people rely on.

## Example requests

- “Customer requests keep getting lost in this page. Set up a tracker so we can
  see what needs attention, who is handling it, and what is done.”
- “Turn these content ideas into a calendar so we know what is going out next.”
- “Our team tracker is hard to follow. Make it easier to see what is waiting on
  someone, without losing our notes.”

## Workflow

1. **Identify the outcome.** Distinguish advice, a design proposal, creating a
   tracker, and improving an existing one. Start with what gets lost or is hard
   to see, what people need to act on, and where the tracker belongs. Infer useful
   fields and views from that work; do not require users to specify a schema.
   A design request does not require a saved proposal or a database write. An
   explicit build request authorizes work within its stated scope.
2. **Inspect what exists.** Read supplied notes or lists as well as linked trackers.
   Fetch supplied databases and their data sources; read actual properties,
   relation targets, and relevant views. Inspect a bounded
   sample of records when it informs the design. Follow project links or search
   the named workspace area for an existing source of truth when needed. Reuse or
   extend a suitable database instead of duplicating it; disclose incomplete
   discovery rather than claiming no equivalent exists.
3. **Design around work.** Choose properties and views using the decisions below.
   Explain consequential choices briefly. Resolve ambiguities that change row
   identity, destination, or data preservation; use established conventions for
   routine choices. Do not force a separate proposal page or approval round when
   the user has already authorized a concrete, non-destructive build.
4. **Apply supported changes.** Use the connection's current tool schemas and
   capabilities. Resolve the correct data source within a database. Create
   relation targets before linking them and views after their properties exist.
```
