## What it does

The skill sets rules for picking a notification pattern. Toasts cover the quick result of an action, inline errors handle field validation, banners carry problems that will not go away on their own, and modals are for blocking errors that need a decision first. A separate table spells out how each pattern gets dismissed: auto-dismiss, manual close, or clearing after correction.

Inside are concrete requirements. Toasts sit bottom-center or bottom-right, stay for 4–6 seconds, and errors never disappear on their own. Only one toast shows at a time; the rest queue up. Inline errors validate on blur rather than on every keystroke, and the message is tied to the field through `aria-describedby`. Every error state needs a recovery action: retry, undo, or draft restore.

The skill triggers on paths like `components/**`, `src/components/**`, `**/*.tsx`, `**/*.jsx`, `design-system/**` and `ui/**`, and on words such as "toast", "inline error", "retry", "banner". If you are not working on UI components, it will not do much for you. Retries have a limit: after three failures it suggests contacting support.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill notifications-and-recovery -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/notifications-and-recovery/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/notifications-and-recovery/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill notifications-and-recovery -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/notifications-and-recovery/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill notifications-and-recovery -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/notifications-and-recovery/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills notifications-and-recovery
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/notifications-and-recovery/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill notifications-and-recovery -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/notifications-and-recovery
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/notifications-and-recovery/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill notifications-and-recovery -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- design a toast after a form saves
- show a validation error next to a field
- add a retry button when the network fails
- build a banner for an issue that persists
- plan draft recovery after a crash

## Example prompts
- Show a toast when the form is saved
- What should the user see if the API call fails?
- Design the error state for this form

# Notifications and Recovery

When something changes — success, failure, or anything in between — the user must know. And when something goes wrong, they must always have a path forward. A notification without a recovery action is just an apology.

## Pattern Selection

| Pattern | When to use | Dismissal |
|---|---|---|
| **Toast** | Transient result of a user action (saved, sent, deleted) | Auto-dismiss 4–6s, manual close |
| **Inline error** | Field-level validation, form errors | Clears on correction |
| **Alert banner** | Persistent issue affecting the current context | Manual dismiss or resolved state |
| **Modal / dialog** | Blocking error requiring a decision before continuing | User action required |
| **Empty state** | No data yet — guide the user to the first action | Replaced by the first item |
| **Skeleton / loading** | Async content pending | Replaced by content |
| **In-place confirmation** | Inline edit saved, row updated, item toggled | Auto-clears after 2–3s |
