# non-fiction-revision

Sorts a non-fiction manuscript into levels and points at what to fix. Useful when the thesis feels vague, arguments sag, or readers get lost.

## What it does

This skill is a diagnostic, not an editor. It splits a book into four levels: thesis and concept, argument structure, evidence, and how it reads for the reader. Symptoms then map to one of six states, NR1 through NR6, from a weak thesis to cascade failures where one fix breaks something else.

Inside is a state table with signals and self-check questions, plus intervention steps for each state. A structural problem, for instance, gets a dependency map of chapters and a check on whether knowledge accumulates or just repeats. A sourcing problem gets an audit of how current the sources are and whether citations stay consistent.

The loudest warning is about the thesis: changing it is the most dangerous move because it can invalidate whole chapters. So the skill says to map every dependency before you touch it. Note the scope — this is built for non-fiction: business, self-help, academic, popular science, memoir. Fiction is out of range.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill non-fiction-revision -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/non-fiction-revision/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/non-fiction-revision/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill non-fiction-revision -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/non-fiction-revision/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill non-fiction-revision -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/non-fiction-revision/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills non-fiction-revision
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/non-fiction-revision/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill non-fiction-revision -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/general/writing/revision/non-fiction-revision
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/non-fiction-revision/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill non-fiction-revision -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/general/writing/revision/non-fiction-revision/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- work out why the thesis reads as vague
- find chapters sitting in the wrong place
- separate weak evidence from strong
- locate where readers lose the thread
- check whether sources have gone stale

## Example prompts
- diagnose my manuscript with non-fiction-revision, the thesis feels weak
- readers say they get lost in chapter 4 — run it through non-fiction-revision
- check my argument structure with the non-fiction-revision skill

# Non-Fiction Revision Diagnostic

## Purpose

Diagnose and guide revisions in non-fiction books (business, self-help, academic, popular science, memoir). Non-fiction operates across multiple levels simultaneously—thesis, structure, evidence, pedagogy. Changes at one level cascade to others. This skill identifies which level needs attention and prevents revision damage.

## Quick Reference

| State | Signal | Core Issue |
|-------|--------|------------|
| NR1 | Thesis feels unclear or weak | Conceptual level problem |
| NR2 | Arguments don't build logically | Structural problem |
| NR3 | Claims lack adequate support | Evidence problem |
| NR4 | Readers report confusion | Pedagogical problem |
| NR5 | Sources outdated or weak | Credibility problem |
| NR6 | Changes causing new problems | Cascade failure |

## The Multi-Level Structure

Every non-fiction book operates simultaneously across:

### Level 1: Conceptual/Thesis
- Core thesis and main arguments
- Foundational assumptions and frameworks
- Philosophical or theoretical positions
- Overall purpose and intended impact

### Level 2: Structural/Argument
- Logical argument sequence and flow
- Chapter organization and dependencies
- Evidence distribution and support patterns
- Reader journey and persuasion architecture

### Level 3: Content/Evidence
- Specific evidence, examples, and data
- Explanations and clarifications
- Voice, tone, and accessibility
- Citations, sources, and credibility markers

### Level 4: Pedagogical/Reader
- Learning progression and scaffolding
- Cognitive load management
- Engagement and retention strategies
- Practical application guidance

## Critical Principle

**Any change at one level potentially affects argument validity and reader comprehension at all other levels.**

Changes propagate:
- **Upward**: New evidence might undermine existing arguments
- **Downward**: Thesis changes require complete restructuring
- **Lateral**: Chapter reordering affects argument development flow

---

## Diagnostic States

### NR1: Thesis/Core Argument Problem

**Symptoms:**
- Thesis feels unclear or unstated
- Main arguments seem weak or unconvincing
- Central claims are frequently disputed
- Book's purpose is hard to articulate
