## What it does

The skill hands your agent a set of rules about Node.js internals. They live in separate files under `rules/`: V8 garbage collection and hidden classes, JIT compilation, libuv event loop phases and thread pool, N-API and `node-addon-api`, plus the internals of streams, net, `fs`, `crypto`, `child_process` and worker threads. There is a primordials rule, which is required for anything under `lib/internal/`.

A second block covers contributing to `nodejs/node`: terse subsystem-prefixed commit titles, DCO sign-off, PR description style. The skill notes that `PR-URL:` and `Reviewed-By:` get added when a change lands, and suggests validating a commit with `npx core-validate-commit --no-validate-metadata <sha>`. For debugging you get gdb and lldb, `--prof`, `--trace-opt`, `--trace-deopt`, and heap snapshots.

The constraint that matters is ordering. Node.js embeds `lib/` files into the binary at compile time through `js2c`, so any edit to `src/` or `lib/` needs a rebuild first — otherwise your tests exercise stale code. The skill tells the agent to ask about your build setup (Make or Ninja, debug or release, your `./configure` flags) instead of guessing. One more thing: on Unix `make test` runs no linters, so `make lint` before each commit is on you. For C++ you want `make format-cpp` with `CLANG_FORMAT_START` from the merge base; the default form only touches staged changes and lets earlier commits in the branch slip through to a CI failure.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mcollina/skills --skill nodejs-core -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nodejs-core/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nodejs-core/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mcollina/skills --skill nodejs-core -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nodejs-core/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mcollina/skills --skill nodejs-core -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nodejs-core/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mcollina/skills nodejs-core
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nodejs-core/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mcollina/skills --skill nodejs-core -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mcollina/skills --path skills/nodejs-core
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nodejs-core/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mcollina/skills --skill nodejs-core -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mcollina/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/nodejs-core/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- debug a native addon crash and pull a stack trace in gdb
- write a nodejs/node commit title in the accepted style
- track down a memory leak in a C++ binding
- find which event loop phase a request is stuck in
- get lint and format-cpp green on the first CI run

## Example prompts
- Help me draft a nodejs/node commit for a change in src/node_buffer.cc, with DCO sign-off
- My N-API addon segfaults — how do I build a debug version and read the stack?
- Why do tests still show old behavior after I edited lib/internal/streams?
