## What it does

The skill covers the `react-native-nitro-fetch`, `react-native-nitro-websockets` and `react-native-nitro-text-decoder` packages — a native replacement for the React Native networking stack on `URLSession` for iOS and `Cronet` for Android through Nitro Modules. A routing table sends each question to a file: cache warming goes to `references/prefetching.md`, axios to `references/axios-adapter.md`, tracing to `references/perfetto-profiling.md`. The assistant reads that file before writing code.

Three areas get their own treatment. Prefetching: `prefetchOnAppStart(...)` and `prewarmOnAppStart(...)` replay stored requests and socket opens on every cold start, so the response is cached by the time JS runs. Importing the native client: explicit imports, or a global replace of `globalThis.fetch`. Debugging: `NetworkInspector` records HTTP and WS at the JS boundary, while native Perfetto and Instruments traces cover DNS, TLS and TTFB.

Install `react-native-nitro-fetch` and `react-native-nitro-modules` first, plus `react-native-nitro-websockets` and `react-native-nitro-text-decoder` if you need sockets or the decoder. Then rebuild: `pod install` for iOS, a fresh `./gradlew` build for Android. Nothing switches on by itself — each mode is wired manually through the reference files. If a cold-start GET stays slow after adding `prefetch`, check `prefetchKey`; that is the first place to look.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill nitro-fetch -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-nitro-fetch -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/react-native-nitro-fetch/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/react-native-nitro-fetch/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-nitro-fetch -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/react-native-nitro-fetch/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-nitro-fetch -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/react-native-nitro-fetch/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install margelo/react-native-skills react-native-nitro-fetch
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/react-native-nitro-fetch/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-nitro-fetch -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/margelo/react-native-skills --path skills/react-native-nitro-fetch
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/react-native-nitro-fetch/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add margelo/react-native-skills --skill react-native-nitro-fetch -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- swap the built-in fetch for a native one without rewriting calls
- warm the cache before a screen mounts
- open a wss connection before React Native boots
- migrate an existing WebSocket to NitroWebSocket
- find the slow API via DNS, TLS and TTFB breakdowns

## Example prompts
- How do I prewarm a wss connection in this repo?
- Make axios go through nitro-fetch
- Why is my cold-start GET still slow after adding prefetch?

# react-native-nitro-fetch

A focused reference for AI coding assistants working in a project that uses the `react-native-nitro-fetch` family of packages. Answer using the real APIs from this repo — not invented ones — by routing to the matching `references/*.md` file below.

## Mental model

`react-native-nitro-fetch` is a drop-in, native-backed replacement for the browser networking stack on React Native:

- `fetch` — WHATWG-compatible, backed by `URLSession` (iOS) and `Cronet` (Android) via [Nitro Modules](https://github.com/mrousavy/nitro).
- `NitroWebSocket` — native WebSocket (libwebsockets + mbedTLS and default in case of iOS) with the same shape as the browser `WebSocket`.
- `NitroTextDecoder` — native UTF-8 decoder that beats the Expo backed JS polyfill.

The performance story has three moving parts, and most questions end up being about one of them:

1. **Prefetching.** Native code can run *before* React Native loads. `prefetchOnAppStart(...)` and `prewarmOnAppStart(...)` replay stored requests / socket opens on every cold start, so by the time JS runs the response is already cached or the socket is already `OPEN`.
