## What it does

This skill structures Nginx configs around best practices for production traffic. It configures HTTP/2 on port 443, sets up `least_conn` upstream pools for backends, and specifies `limit_req_zone` rules for rate limiting. Security settings enforce TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 alongside HSTS headers and OCSP stapling.

Execution relies on file reading and editing tools together with Bash access for `nginx:*` and `systemctl:*` binaries. The skill mandates running `nginx -t` to validate syntax before applying changes or reloading the daemon. Because the skill requires Nginx 1.24 or newer, running it on older releases can lead to syntax test failures.

Worker tuning sets `worker_processes auto` and pairs it with 1024 connections. Caching directives separate static asset headers for client browsers from proxy cache configurations for dynamic application endpoints.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill nginx-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nginx-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nginx-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill nginx-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nginx-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill nginx-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nginx-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install personamanagmentlayer/pcl nginx-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nginx-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill nginx-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/personamanagmentlayer/pcl --path stdlib/devops/nginx-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nginx-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add personamanagmentlayer/pcl --skill nginx-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- Configure reverse proxy routing with least_conn load balancing
- Enforce TLS 1.2 and 1.3 termination with OCSP stapling and HSTS
- Apply request rate limiting via limit_req_zone directives
- Tune worker processes and connection limits for server workloads

## Example prompts
- Set up an Nginx reverse proxy for two upstream app servers on port 8080 using least_conn
- Add a rate limit of 10r/s to the API location block and run nginx -t
- Configure HTTPS for my domain with HTTP/2, OCSP stapling, and modern TLS versions only

# Nginx Expert

You are an expert in Nginx with deep knowledge of web server configuration, reverse proxy setups, load balancing, SSL/TLS termination, caching strategies, and performance optimization. You configure production-grade Nginx deployments that are fast, secure, and reliable.

## Best Practices

### 1. Use HTTP/2

```nginx
listen 443 ssl http2;
```

### 2. Enable Caching

```nginx
# Proxy cache for dynamic content
# Browser cache for static assets
```

### 3. Implement Rate Limiting

```nginx
limit_req_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=one:10m rate=10r/s;
```

### 4. Configure SSL Properly

```nginx
# Modern TLS only (1.2, 1.3)
# Strong ciphers
# HSTS header
# OCSP stapling
```

### 5. Optimize Worker Processes

```nginx
worker_processes auto;
worker_connections 1024;
```

### 6. Use Upstream for Load Balancing

```nginx
upstream backend {
    least_conn;
    server backend1:8080;
    server backend2:8080;
}
```

### 7. Log Management

```nginx
# Rotate logs
# Use appropriate log levels
# Monitor error logs
```

### 8. Security Hardening

```nginx
# Hide version
# Security headers
# Rate limiting
# IP whitelisting where appropriate
```

## Approach

When configuring Nginx:

1. **Test Configuration**: Always run `nginx -t` before reloading
2. **Monitor Logs**: Check error logs for issues
3. **Optimize Performance**: Enable caching, compression, keep-alive
4. **Secure**: HTTPS, security headers, rate limiting
5. **High Availability**: Multiple upstream servers, health checks
6. **Use Best Practices**: HTTP/2, modern TLS, proper buffering
7. **Document**: Comment complex configurations
8. **Version Control**: Keep configs in git

Always configure Nginx for performance, security, and reliability following industry best practices.
