## What it does

The skill gives the agent a frame for visual work on a Next.js and shadcn/ui app. Before a new view or a substantial redesign it calls `frontend-design` to settle typography, palette and composition, and `icons` when new UI icons or brand assets are needed. Whatever preset, theme, fonts and icon family come out of that, the skill wants them written into the project's design notes and kept until the brief changes.

Inside are styling and motion instructions plus reference files: `styling.md`, `architecture.md`, `sidebar.md`, `project-setup.md` and `shadcn-platform.md`. The skill covers when grid patterns, gradients, soft background lights and short animations earn their place, and it asks you to inspect the rendered view at mobile and desktop widths. It also flags narrow Client Component boundaries, authorization inside Server Actions and semantic theme tokens.

For new projects it uses Bun: `bun install`, `bun add`, `bun run <script>`, `bunx --bun <cli>`. In existing ones it follows `packageManager` and the lockfile. `shadcn docs`, `add` and `view` reach the registry over the network, so offline work is out — read the `components/ui` source and the primitive's types instead. One more thing worth knowing: a `(protected)` route group enforces nothing, so access checks are yours to write.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-shadcn -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nextjs-shadcn/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nextjs-shadcn/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-shadcn -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nextjs-shadcn/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-shadcn -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nextjs-shadcn/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills nextjs-shadcn
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nextjs-shadcn/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-shadcn -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills --path skills/nextjs-shadcn
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nextjs-shadcn/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-shadcn -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/nextjs-shadcn/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a Next.js page with deliberate typography and theme
- pick fonts, palette and an icon family that match the product's tone
- strip decorative badges and empty marketing headings
- add brief motion that ties an action to its result
- check the layout at mobile and desktop widths

## Example prompts
- Build a pricing page in Next.js with shadcn/ui and choose fonts and a theme for our product
- Rework the dashboard — it needs a new visual direction, look at backgrounds and icons
- Run the design-system lint and report what changed

# Next.js + shadcn/ui

Build an interface with a visual identity that fits its content, audience and task. These are design defaults, not a fixed page recipe; the user's direction and an established design system take precedence.

## Choose the visual direction

For a new view or substantial redesign, use `frontend-design` to choose the typography, palette and composition before building. Preserve a working visual system during smaller edits.

Choose fonts for the product's tone, reading density and language support. Use [shadcn/create](https://ui.shadcn.com/create) to choose the component style, body and heading fonts, icon family and theme together. Compare the preview with representative content, then make deliberate choices about type scale, spacing and hierarchy. Neither the default preset nor an unusual font guarantees a good design.

Record the chosen preset, theme, fonts and icon family in the project's design notes; preserve that direction unless the brief changes. References and images are project-specific. Component style and icon family are separate choices; [styling.md](references/styling.md) covers them.

Keep the user's task clear:

- Cut decorative badges, repeated headings, empty marketing claims and helper text that explains the obvious.
- Keep useful status, navigation, explanations and disclosures.
- Use cards, sections and CTAs because the content needs them, rather than filling a template.
- Use brief motion to connect an action with its result, expanded details or active navigation. Reuse existing interaction components; [styling.md](references/styling.md) covers Motion, GSAP and `vercel-react-view-transitions` for different animation needs.
- Reuse the project's icon family. Use `icons` when sourcing new UI icons, file-type icons or official brand assets; an icon does not automatically replace a clear label.

## Use atmosphere when it helps
