## What it does

App Router components run on the server by default. They handle `async/await`, secrets, and data fetching without client bundles. The skill prevents adding `'use client'` to pages that do not need it. That directive stays reserved for state hooks and browser event handlers.

Server navigation relies on `<Link>` and `redirect()`. In Next.js 15+, reading `cookies()` and `headers()` requires `await`. When using `useSearchParams()`, the skill enforces wrapping that logic in a `Suspense` boundary.

The `any` type is banned. Project settings enforce `@typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any`, so missing types will break the build.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-server-client-components -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nextjs-server-client-components/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nextjs-server-client-components/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-server-client-components -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nextjs-server-client-components/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-server-client-components -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nextjs-server-client-components/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills nextjs-server-client-components
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nextjs-server-client-components/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-server-client-components -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --path nextjs-server-client-components
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nextjs-server-client-components/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-server-client-components -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- Separate Server and Client Components in Next.js App Router
- Wrap useSearchParams logic in Suspense boundaries
- Read cookies and headers using next/headers
- Replace any with explicit TypeScript types for props and form events

## Example prompts
- Build a product search page reading query parameters with Suspense
- Extract an interactive modal counter into a client component
- Fix a server component that mistakenly imports client hooks

# Next.js Server Components vs Client Components

## Overview

Provide comprehensive guidance for choosing between Server Components and Client Components in Next.js App Router, including cookie/header access, searchParams handling, pathname routing, and React's 'use' API for promise unwrapping.

## TypeScript: NEVER Use `any` Type

**CRITICAL RULE:** This codebase has `@typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` enabled. Using `any` will cause build failures.

**❌ WRONG:**
```typescript
function handleSubmit(e: any) { ... }
const data: any[] = [];
```

**✅ CORRECT:**
```typescript
function handleSubmit(e: React.FormEvent<HTMLFormElement>) { ... }
const data: string[] = [];
```

### Common Next.js Type Patterns

```typescript
// Page props
function Page({ params }: { params: { slug: string } }) { ... }
function Page({ searchParams }: { searchParams: { [key: string]: string | string[] | undefined } }) { ... }
// Form events
const handleSubmit = (e: React.FormEvent<HTMLFormElement>) => { ... }
const handleChange = (e: React.ChangeEvent<HTMLInputElement>) => { ... }
// Server actions
async function myAction(formData: FormData) { ... }
```

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Deciding whether to use Server or Client Components
- Accessing cookies, headers, or other server-side data
- Working with searchParams or route parameters
- Needing pathname or routing information
- Unwrapping promises with React 'use' API
- Debugging 'use client' boundary issues
- Optimizing component rendering strategy

## Core Decision: Server vs Client Components

### Default: Server Components

**All components in the App Router are Server Components by default.** No directive needed.

```typescript
// app/components/ProductList.tsx
// This is a Server Component (default)
export default async function ProductList() {
  const products = await fetch('https://api.example.com/products');
  const data = await products.json();
  return (
    <ul>
      {data.map(product => (
        <li key={product.id}>{product.name}</li>
      ))}
    </ul>
  );
}
```

**When to use Server Components:**
- Fetching data from APIs or databases
- Accessing backend resources (environment variables, file system)
