## What it does

The agent gets reference docs split by topic: Core Web Vitals, `next/image`, `next/font`, caching, Server Components, Suspense, the bundle, metadata and SEO, route handlers, Next.js 16 patterns. It loads the matching file from `references/` instead of the whole set at once.

A useful part is the conversion table. Swapping `useEffect` plus `fetch` for a plain async Server Component is listed as roughly 70% less JS and a faster TTFB. There are ready snippets too: `priority` on the LCP image, `unstable_cache` paired with `revalidateTag`, and a page wrapped in `Suspense` with separate skeletons.

The skill assumes you already write React and Next.js and know what LCP, INP and CLS mean. It won't run Lighthouse for you or fix a project on its own. Measure first in DevTools or PageSpeed Insights, because otherwise you have nothing to compare against after the changes.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-performance -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nextjs-performance/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nextjs-performance/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-performance -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nextjs-performance/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-performance -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nextjs-performance/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit nextjs-performance
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nextjs-performance/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-performance -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-typescript/skills/nextjs-performance
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nextjs-performance/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-performance -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- cut LCP by sizing the hero `next/image` correctly
- stop layout shift caused by web fonts
- replace a client-side fetch with server-side data access
- cache catalog data and invalidate it by tag
- split a heavy bundle with dynamic imports

## Example prompts
- Walk me through the Core Web Vitals on the home page: LCP is high, fix it with `next/image`
- Convert this product list from `useEffect` + `fetch` to a Server Component
- Set up `unstable_cache` for the catalog and revalidate the tag when a record is created

# Next.js Performance Optimization

Expert guidance for optimizing Next.js applications with focus on Core Web Vitals, modern patterns, and best practices.

## Overview

This skill provides comprehensive guidance for optimizing Next.js applications. It covers Core Web Vitals optimization (LCP, INP, CLS), modern React patterns, Server Components, caching strategies, and bundle optimization techniques. Designed for developers already familiar with React/Next.js who want to implement production-grade optimizations.

## When to Use

Use this skill when working on Next.js applications and need to:

- Optimize Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) for better performance and SEO
- Implement image optimization with `next/image` for faster loading
- Configure font optimization with `next/font` to eliminate layout shift
- Set up caching strategies using `unstable_cache`, `revalidateTag`, or ISR
- Convert Client Components to Server Components for reduced bundle size
- Implement Suspense streaming for progressive page loading
- Analyze and reduce bundle size with code splitting and dynamic imports
- Configure metadata and SEO for better search engine visibility
- Optimize API route handlers for better performance
- Apply Next.js 16 and React 19 modern patterns

### Coverage Areas

- **Core Web Vitals optimization** (LCP, INP, CLS)
- **Image optimization** with `next/image`
- **Font optimization** with `next/font`
- **Caching strategies** (`unstable_cache`, `revalidateTag`, ISR)
- **Server Components** patterns and Client-to-Server conversion
- **Streaming and Suspense** for progressive loading
- **Bundle optimization** and code splitting
- **Metadata and SEO** configuration
- **Route handlers** optimization
- **Next.js 16 + React 19** patterns

## Instructions

### Before Starting

1. **Analyze current performance** with Lighthouse
