# nextjs-cache-architecture

Structures caching architecture in Next.js 16+ App Router projects. It sets up the "use cache" directive, a typed tag registry, and Suspense boundaries.

## What it does

The skill organizes caching across Next.js 16+ projects instead of scattering random cache calls. The architecture relies on three structural pieces: a centralized tag registry in `lib/cache/tags.ts`, server revalidation helpers wrapping `updateTag()` in `lib/cache/revalidate.ts`, and placing `"use cache"` strictly inside data-fetching functions or cached children. Page components remain synchronous and focus on layout orchestration rather than direct data fetching.

Projects must enable `cacheComponents: true` inside `next.config.ts`, because the `"use cache"` directive will fail without it. The skill also provides templates for migrating away from `unstable_cache` and patterns for isolating dynamic user content within dedicated Suspense boundaries.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohamed-hossam1/nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-cache-architecture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nextjs-cache-architecture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nextjs-cache-architecture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohamed-hossam1/nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-cache-architecture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nextjs-cache-architecture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohamed-hossam1/nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-cache-architecture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nextjs-cache-architecture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohamed-hossam1/nextjs-skills nextjs-cache-architecture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nextjs-cache-architecture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohamed-hossam1/nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-cache-architecture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohamed-hossam1/nextjs-skills --path skills/nextjs-cache-architecture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nextjs-cache-architecture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohamed-hossam1/nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-cache-architecture -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- centralize cache keys in a typed registry at `lib/cache/tags.ts`
- route all `updateTag` calls through dedicated revalidation helpers
- move data fetching out of page components into `"use cache"` functions
- configure `Suspense` boundaries for partial prerendering
- migrate existing codebases from `unstable_cache` to `"use cache"`

## Example prompts
- Help me design cache tags and revalidation for a posts table in Next.js 16
- Build a cache tag registry and mutation helpers in lib/cache for products
- Migrate my existing data queries from unstable_cache to the use cache directive

# Next.js Cache Architecture

Architect caching in a Next.js 16+ App Router project from day one — not just
dropping `"use cache"` where it happens to fit, but structuring the tag
registry, revalidation utilities, Suspense boundaries, and mutation wiring so
the cache stays correct as the codebase grows.

## How to use this skill

Apply every rule and template below to the user's actual project. Replace
placeholders like `[Entity]` and `[collection]` with names from their codebase
before writing any code.

calls for it.

| Caching anything that depends on a logged-in user                                                       | `references/personalized-content.md`          |

Drop-in templates in `assets/` (rename placeholders to match the user's
codebase):

- `assets/tags.ts` → `lib/cache/tags.ts`
- `assets/revalidate.ts` → `lib/cache/revalidate.ts`
- `assets/SuspenseOnSearchParams.tsx` → `components/SuspenseOnSearchParams.tsx`
