## What it does

This skill guides Next.js 16+ work built on the App Router. It covers default Server Components, Client Components marked with `"use client"`, Server Actions for forms, API endpoints in `route.ts`, and conventions such as `layout.tsx`, `page.tsx`, `loading.tsx`, and `error.tsx`.

It includes examples for explicit caching with `"use cache"`, `cacheLife`, and `cacheTag`; parallel routes using `@slot`; intercepting routes; and moves from `middleware.ts` to `proxy.ts`. In Next.js 16, `cookies()`, `headers()`, params, and search params are asynchronous, so migration work calls for checking existing API calls.

The skill can read, write, and edit files, and run Bash commands. Its examples use TypeScript, React, and Next.js.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-app-router -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nextjs-app-router/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nextjs-app-router/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-app-router -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nextjs-app-router/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-app-router -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nextjs-app-router/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit nextjs-app-router
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nextjs-app-router/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-app-router -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-typescript/skills/nextjs-app-router
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nextjs-app-router/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill nextjs-app-router -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- create a Next.js 16+ App Router project
- separate Server Components from Client Components
- handle form submission with a Server Action
- add an API endpoint in `route.ts`
- configure cached data with `cacheLife` and `cacheTag`

## Example prompts
- Create a user page as a Server Component in `app/users/page.tsx`.
- Build a form with a Server Action in `app/actions.ts` and revalidate the route after saving.
- Migrate the routing boundary from `middleware.ts` to `proxy.ts` for Next.js 16.

# Next.js App Router (Next.js 16+)

Build modern React applications using Next.js 16+ with App Router architecture.

## Overview

This skill provides patterns for Server Components (default) and Client Components ("use client"), Server Actions for mutations and form handling, Route Handlers for API endpoints, explicit caching with "use cache" directive, parallel and intercepting routes, and Next.js 16 async APIs and proxy.ts.

## When to Use

Activate when user requests involve:
- "Create a Next.js 16 project", "Set up App Router"
- "Server Component", "Client Component", "use client"
- "Server Action", "form submission", "mutation"
- "Route Handler", "API endpoint", "route.ts"
- "use cache", "cacheLife", "cacheTag", "revalidation"
- "parallel routes", "`@`slot", "intercepting routes"
- "proxy.ts", "migrate from middleware.ts"
- "layout.tsx", "page.tsx", "loading.tsx", "error.tsx", "not-found.tsx"
- "generateMetadata", "next/image", "next/font"

## Quick Reference

| File | Purpose | Directive | Purpose |
|------|---------|-----------|---------|
| `page.tsx` | Route page | `"use server"` | Server Action function |
| `layout.tsx` | Shared layout | `"use client"` | Client Component boundary |
| `loading.tsx` | Suspense loading | `"use cache"` | Explicit caching (Next.js 16) |
| `error.tsx` | Error boundary | | |
| `not-found.tsx` | 404 page | | |
| `route.ts` | API Route Handler | | |
| `proxy.ts` | Routing boundary | | |

## Instructions

### Create New Project

```bash
npx create-next-app@latest my-app --typescript --tailwind --app --turbopack
```

### Server Component

Server Components are the default in App Router. They run on the server and can use async/await.

```tsx
// app/users/page.tsx
async function getUsers() {
  const apiUrl = process.env.API_URL;
  const res = await fetch(`${apiUrl}/users`);
  return res.json();
}
export default async function UsersPage() {
  const users = await getUsers();
  return <main>{users.map(user => <UserCard key={user.id} user={user} />)}</main>;
}
```

### Client Component

Add `"use client"` when using hooks, browser APIs, or event handlers.

```tsx
