## What it does

The skill hands the agent guidance on the harder parts of the App Router: Route Handlers in place of the old API Routes, parallel and intercepting routes, Server Actions, error boundaries, draft mode, and streaming with Suspense. Form handling and setting cookies from client components get their own sections.

Type safety is spelled out. The agent is told never to write `any`, because the codebase has `@typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` on and that code fails the build. Form actions carry a hard rule too: a function passed to `<form action={...}>` must return void, so TypeScript rejects any returned value. If you need to send back an error or a message, the skill points to `useActionState`. Action files belong under `app/` — `action.ts` for a single handler, `actions.ts` for a group — kept next to the UI that calls them.

It assumes an App Router project with the no-`any` lint rule enabled. On a Pages Router codebase, or one where `any` is allowed, some of the advice will fight your setup. Worth checking the config before letting the agent loose on files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-advanced-routing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nextjs-advanced-routing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nextjs-advanced-routing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-advanced-routing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nextjs-advanced-routing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-advanced-routing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nextjs-advanced-routing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills nextjs-advanced-routing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nextjs-advanced-routing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-advanced-routing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --path nextjs-advanced-routing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nextjs-advanced-routing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills --skill nextjs-advanced-routing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wsimmonds/claude-nextjs-skills/tree/HEAD/nextjs-advanced-routing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build an API endpoint in `route.ts` instead of the old API Routes
- wire a form to Server Actions without breaking the build on a return value
- open a photo in a modal over the feed with an intercepting route
- preview CMS drafts through draft mode
- split server actions away from client components into their own files

## Example prompts
- Add a create-post form using Server Actions in `app/actions.ts`, no return value from the action
- Create `app/api/items/route.ts` with GET and POST handlers
- Set up an intercepting route so a photo opens in a modal over the feed

# Next.js Advanced Routing

## Overview

Provide comprehensive guidance for advanced Next.js App Router features including Route Handlers (API routes), Parallel Routes, Intercepting Routes, Server Actions, error handling, draft mode, and streaming with Suspense.

## TypeScript: NEVER Use `any` Type

**CRITICAL RULE:** This codebase has `@typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` enabled. Using `any` will cause build failures.

**❌ WRONG:**
```typescript
function handleSubmit(e: any) { ... }
const data: any[] = [];
```

**✅ CORRECT:**
```typescript
function handleSubmit(e: React.FormEvent<HTMLFormElement>) { ... }
const data: string[] = [];
```

### Common Next.js Type Patterns

```typescript
// Page props
function Page({ params }: { params: { slug: string } }) { ... }
function Page({ searchParams }: { searchParams: { [key: string]: string | string[] | undefined } }) { ... }
// Form events
const handleSubmit = (e: React.FormEvent<HTMLFormElement>) => { ... }
const handleChange = (e: React.ChangeEvent<HTMLInputElement>) => { ... }
// Server actions
async function myAction(formData: FormData) { ... }
```

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Creating API endpoints with Route Handlers
- Implementing parallel or intercepting routes
- Building forms with Server Actions
- Setting cookies or handling mutations
- Creating error boundaries
- Implementing draft mode for CMS previews
- Setting up streaming and Suspense boundaries
- Building complex routing patterns (modals, drawers)
