## What it does

The skill provides guidelines for setting up Auth.js v5 with `next-auth@beta`. It instructs the agent to rely on the universal `auth()` function and configure environment variables using the `AUTH_` prefix, including `AUTH_SECRET` generated via `openssl rand -base64 32`.

It covers both cookie-based JWT sessions and database storage using `PrismaAdapter`. Using a database adapter directly inside Edge middleware fails at runtime. Because of this limitation, the skill provides a split architecture: lightweight route authorization rules reside in `auth.config.ts`, while database adapters remain in `auth.ts`.

For component trees, it includes patterns for wrapping layouts in `SessionProvider` and calling `await auth()` inside React Server Components.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill nextauth-authentication -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nextauth-authentication/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nextauth-authentication/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill nextauth-authentication -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nextauth-authentication/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill nextauth-authentication -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nextauth-authentication/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills nextauth-authentication
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nextauth-authentication/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill nextauth-authentication -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path nextauth-authentication
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nextauth-authentication/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill nextauth-authentication -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- integrate Auth.js v5 into a Next.js application
- configure OAuth providers like GitHub and Google
- split NextAuth configuration for Edge middleware and Prisma
- protect server and client routes with session checks

## Example prompts
- Set up NextAuth v5 in this Next.js app using GitHub and Google providers
- Write a middleware.ts file to protect /dashboard routes using auth()
- Split my auth configuration into auth.config.ts and auth.ts for Edge support

# NextAuth Authentication

You are an expert in NextAuth.js (Auth.js v5) authentication implementation. Follow these guidelines when integrating authentication in Next.js applications.

## Core Principles

- Use Auth.js v5 patterns and the universal `auth()` function
- Implement proper session management strategy based on your needs
- Always validate sessions server-side for sensitive operations
- Configure environment variables correctly with the `AUTH_` prefix

## Installation

```bash
npm install next-auth@beta
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
# Required
AUTH_SECRET=your-32-byte-secret-here  # Generate with: openssl rand -base64 32
# Provider credentials (auto-detected if named correctly)
AUTH_GITHUB_ID=your-github-client-id
AUTH_GITHUB_SECRET=your-github-client-secret
AUTH_GOOGLE_ID=your-google-client-id
AUTH_GOOGLE_SECRET=your-google-client-secret
# Optional: Custom URL (auto-detected in most environments)
AUTH_URL=https://your-domain.com
```

## Basic Configuration

### auth.ts (Root Configuration)

```typescript
import NextAuth from 'next-auth';
import GitHub from 'next-auth/providers/github';
import Google from 'next-auth/providers/google';
import Credentials from 'next-auth/providers/credentials';
import { PrismaAdapter } from '@auth/prisma-adapter';
import { prisma } from '@/lib/prisma';
export const { handlers, auth, signIn, signOut } = NextAuth({
  adapter: PrismaAdapter(prisma),
  providers: [
    GitHub, // Credentials auto-detected from AUTH_GITHUB_ID/SECRET
    Google,
    Credentials({
      credentials: {
        email: { label: 'Email', type: 'email' },
        password: { label: 'Password', type: 'password' },
      },
      async authorize(credentials) {
        // Validate credentials
        const user = await validateCredentials(credentials);
        if (!user) return null;
        return user;
      },
    }),
  ],
  session: {
    strategy: 'jwt', // or 'database'
    maxAge: 30 * 24 * 60 * 60, // 30 days
  },
  pages: {
    signIn: '/auth/signin',
    error: '/auth/error',
  },
  callbacks: {
    async jwt({ token, user, account }) {
      if (user) {
        token.id = user.id;
        token.role = user.role;
      }
      return token;
    },
    async session({ session, token }) {
      if (token) {
        session.user.id = token.id as string;
        session.user.role = token.role as string;
      }
      return session;
    },
    async authorized({ auth, request }) {
      const isAuthenticated = !!auth?.user;
      const isProtectedRoute = request.nextUrl.pathname.startsWith('/dashboard');
      if (isProtectedRoute && !isAuthenticated) {
        return false; // Redirect to sign-in
