## What it does

The skill walks through architecture design: convolutional nets for images, recurrent nets for sequences, self-attention transformers, and hybrids that mix CNNs, RNNs and attention. It ships working code samples in PyTorch and TensorFlow — an MLP, a CNN with conv-norm-ReLU-pool blocks, an LSTM, a transformer block with multi-head attention, and residual blocks.

Design trade-offs get their own section: depth versus width, skip connections for deeper training, batch norm and layer norm for stability, dropout and L1/L2 against overfitting, and activation choices like ReLU, GELU and Swish. It is a reference, not a framework, so the sample layer sizes are starting points you will rewrite for your own inputs and outputs.

Install goes through `npx skills add` with a platform flag, and the skill file lands in your tool's skills directory. The samples import PyTorch and TensorFlow in the same file, so set up both before you run anything.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill neural-network-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neural-network-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neural-network-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill neural-network-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neural-network-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill neural-network-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neural-network-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts neural-network-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neural-network-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill neural-network-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/neural-network-design
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neural-network-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill neural-network-design -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts/tree/HEAD/skills/neural-network-design/SKILL.md
## When to use it
- pick an architecture for image classification or object detection
- build an LSTM or GRU for time series forecasting
- write a transformer block with multi-head attention from scratch
- add skip connections so a deep network actually trains
- choose activation, normalization and dropout for a task
## Example prompts
- Design a PyTorch CNN for 3x32x32 image classification into 10 classes
- Show me a transformer block with multi-head attention and layer norm
- Build a ResNet block with a skip connection and explain the shortcut
# Neural Network Design
## Overview
This skill covers designing and implementing neural network architectures including CNNs, RNNs, Transformers, and ResNets using PyTorch and TensorFlow, with focus on architecture selection, layer composition, and optimization techniques.
## When to Use
- Designing custom neural network architectures for computer vision tasks like image classification or object detection
- Building sequence models for time series forecasting, natural language processing, or video analysis
- Implementing transformer-based models for language understanding or generation tasks
- Creating hybrid architectures that combine CNNs, RNNs, and attention mechanisms
- Optimizing network depth, width, and skip connections for better training and performance
- Selecting appropriate activation functions, normalization layers, and regularization techniques
## Core Architecture Types
- **Feedforward Networks (MLPs)**: Fully connected layers
- **Convolutional Networks (CNNs)**: Image processing
- **Recurrent Networks (RNNs, LSTMs, GRUs)**: Sequence processing
- **Transformers**: Self-attention based architecture
- **Hybrid Models**: Combining multiple architecture types
## Network Design Principles
- **Depth vs Width**: Trade-offs between layers and units
- **Skip Connections**: Residual networks for deeper training
- **Normalization**: Batch norm, layer norm for stability
- **Regularization**: Dropout, L1/L2 preventing overfitting
- **Activation Functions**: ReLU, GELU, Swish for non-linearity
## PyTorch and TensorFlow Implementation
```python
import torch
import torch.nn as nn
import tensorflow as tf
from tensorflow import keras
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

# 1. Feedforward Neural Network (MLP)
print("=== 1. Feedforward Neural Network ===")

class MLPPyTorch(nn.Module):
    def __init__(self, input_size, hidden_sizes, output_size):
        super().__init__()
        layers = []
        prev_size = input_size

        for hidden_size in hidden_sizes:
            layers.append(nn.Linear(prev_size, hidden_size))
            layers.append(nn.BatchNorm1d(hidden_size))
            layers.append(nn.ReLU())
            layers.append(nn.Dropout(0.3))
            prev_size = hidden_size

        layers.append(nn.Linear(prev_size, output_size))
        self.model = nn.Sequential(*layers)

    def forward(self, x):
