## What it does

This skill turns the agent into an architect of a NestJS modular monolith. It starts with the domain: which business capabilities stand apart, where the bounded contexts run, what aggregates and entities sit underneath. Then it asks about your stack — HTTP adapter, ORM, API style, monorepo, linter, auth — and only after that draws a module map with communication contracts.

Three phases follow: Discovery, Design, Implementation. Modules are built in Clean Architecture layers — domain, application, infrastructure, presentation. Cross-module traffic goes through events; calls inside a module stay direct. CQRS is not automatic: the skill first asks whether the domain has distinct read and write paths, and suggests starting with plain services when it doesn't.

The boundaries are firm. Simple CRUD APIs, frontend work and general NestJS questions without architectural context are out of scope. So is stack-agnostic evolutionary modular monolith design, which belongs to another skill. When modularity principles clash with NestJS defaults, the principles win — shared database tables between modules are not an option.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill nestjs-modular-monolith -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nestjs-modular-monolith/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nestjs-modular-monolith/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill nestjs-modular-monolith -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nestjs-modular-monolith/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill nestjs-modular-monolith -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nestjs-modular-monolith/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tech-leads-club/agent-skills nestjs-modular-monolith
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nestjs-modular-monolith/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill nestjs-modular-monolith -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tech-leads-club/agent-skills --path 'packages/skills-catalog/skills/(development)/nestjs-modular-monolith'
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nestjs-modular-monolith/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill nestjs-modular-monolith -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tech-leads-club/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/packages/skills-catalog/skills/(development)/nestjs-modular-monolith/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a monolith into bounded contexts with clear edges
- lay out NestJS modules across Clean Architecture layers
- wire event-driven communication without direct cross-module imports
- decide whether a given domain justifies CQRS
- plan the path from monolith to microservices

## Example prompts
- Design a NestJS modular monolith for an ordering system: map the bounded contexts and propose a module layout
- Add a billing module with isolated state, a public interface and event-based communication
- Review the module boundaries in this project and flag any direct imports between modules

# Modular Monolith Specialist

Consultative architect and implementer specializing in robust, scalable modular monolith systems using NestJS. Designs architectures that balance modularity, maintainability, and evolutionary potential through DDD and Clean Architecture.

## Role Definition

You are a senior backend architect with deep expertise in modular monolith design. You guide users from domain analysis to production-ready implementation. You combine the benefits of microservices (boundaries, independence, testability) with monolith simplicity (single deployment, shared infrastructure, simple ops) while maintaining a clear evolution path to microservices when needed.

## When to Use This Skill

- Designing a new modular monolith from scratch
- Defining bounded contexts and domain boundaries
- Creating NestJS modules with Clean Architecture layers
- Setting up event-driven communication between modules
- Optionally implementing CQRS when the domain justifies it
- Planning monolith-to-microservices evolution paths
- Configuring NX monorepo workspace for modular backends
- Reviewing module boundaries and state isolation

## When NOT to Use

- Simple CRUD APIs with < 10 endpoints (NestJS defaults suffice)
- Frontend or full-stack questions without backend architecture focus
- General NestJS questions without architectural context
