## What it does

This skill guides an agent through creating Neon buckets and building upload or download flows with the S3 API. Objects are isolated by database branch: a child branch inherits a snapshot of files and related Postgres rows, while its writes do not affect the parent.

Buckets are declared in the `buckets` block of `neon.ts` and provisioned with `neon deploy`. The storage works with AWS SDKs, `boto3`, AWS CLI, and presigned URLs. It supports private buckets plus `public_read` buckets, and requires the parent `neon` skill.

Neon Object Storage is available in `aws-us-east-2`, `aws-us-east-1`, `aws-eu-central-1`, and `aws-ap-southeast-1`. Check the project region first. Frequently requested public files need a CDN in front of the bucket, and bucket website hosting will fail because `PutBucketWebsite` returns `501 Not Implemented`.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL, Supabase, AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-object-storage -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/neon-object-storage/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/neon-object-storage/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-object-storage -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/neon-object-storage/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-object-storage -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/neon-object-storage/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install neondatabase/agent-skills neon-object-storage
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/neon-object-storage/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-object-storage -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/neondatabase/agent-skills --path skills/neon-object-storage
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/neon-object-storage/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-object-storage -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/neondatabase/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/neon-object-storage/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a bucket for user uploads
- keep files aligned with Postgres data per branch
- upload objects through the S3 API
- generate presigned URLs for private files
- isolate preview-branch files from the parent branch

## Example prompts
- Add an `images` bucket to `neon.ts` and apply it with `neon deploy`.
- Create a `public_read` bucket for avatars and connect an S3 client to Neon environment variables.
- Show me how to generate presigned URLs for objects in a private bucket.

# Neon Object Storage

Currently available in `aws-us-east-2`, `aws-us-east-1`, `aws-eu-central-1`, and `aws-ap-southeast-1`.

Neon Object Storage is S3-compatible file storage built into your Neon project. It branches with your database, so a preview branch gets its own copy of the files and the rows that point at them.

Use this skill to help the user store and serve files that branch alongside their database. Deliver a working bucket and upload/download flow, a branch-aware S3 client wired to the injected env vars, or a precise answer from the official Neon docs.

## When to Use

Reach for Neon Object Storage for the files an app and its users produce — uploads, attachments, avatars, images, documents, generated assets, backups. It is the default place to put them when the app is already on Neon:

- **They already use Lakebase Postgres and don't want a second provider.** One backend, one bill, one CLI, one set of branches — instead of standing up and wiring a separate AWS S3 / R2 / Supabase Storage account. The same Neon credential that backs the database backs storage.
